Strange things are happening in the world of Microsoft, Windows, and Xbox. The PlayStation Store charts are filled with Microsoft-owned games, the nearly decade-old Fallout game has skyrocketed in popularity, and Microsoft and OpenAI are reportedly working on an AI project called “Stargate.” . All of these articles make sense in context, but if you just glanced at the headlines, some of them would seem very strange. Luckily, we’re here to take a quick look at this week’s biggest stories and make sense of it all.
Xbox takes over PlayStation Store
In a headline no one would have expected ten years ago, Microsoft took over the PlayStation Store this week. No, Microsoft didn’t hack the PlayStation Store or buy Sony. However, the tech giant has managed to grab some top spots on the PlayStation Store. Perhaps most notably, Microsoft-owned titles occupied more of the top 25 positions than Sony co-ops.
Microsoft currently has more games on the PlayStation Store’s top 25 best-selling list than Sony. This list includes his two Fallout games and his two Microsoft first-party titles that were previously only available on Xbox consoles. https://t.co/wE2trMBy0yApril 18, 2024
Microsoft has invested billions of dollars into gaming in recent years, including acquiring Activision Blizzard and Bethesda. Between the franchises acquired through these acquisitions and other popular titles, it’s no surprise that the PlayStation Store’s top charts are filled with Microsoft-owned games. In many ways, this week served as an example of why Microsoft is investing so much money into acquiring companies and investing in Xbox games across various platforms.
Fallout revival
Prime Video’s Fallout TV show premiered this week, sparking interest in the series. All of his Fallout games have skyrocketed in player numbers on Steam, and several entries in the series have become bestsellers on Steam and GOG.
At its peak player count, Fallout 4 had 472,000 concurrent players, and that was nine years ago. Before the launch of the Fallout TV show, the game had between 18,000 and 20,000 players. However, due to increased interest in the series, Fallout 4’s concurrent player count soared to 53,000.
Other games like Fallout 76 and Fallout 3 have seen similar spikes. In Fallout: New Vegas, the player count has more than tripled.
The Fallout TV show received great reviews in its first season. “Fallout represents some of the best that a game-to-TV adaptation can offer, continuing the look, action, and ideas of the iconic series while offering multiple perspectives over the course of a season, making it easy for fans and newcomers alike. will make you want to know more as well,” our own Samuel Tolbert said in his Season 1 review of the Fallout TV series.
Interest in the franchise has likely increased due to the current franchise-wide sale. The Fallout game is also included in Xbox Game Pass, so anyone who already has a subscription to the game can jump in and try it out at no extra cost after watching the show (or in general) .
Microsoft, OpenAI, Stargate
With so much talk about TV shows, we don’t blame you for thinking that Stargate being in the news is a good thing for fans of this great sci-fi series. Unfortunately, Microsoft and OpenAI are not funding the Stargate TV series. Instead, the two tech giants are reportedly investing more than $100 billion in new AI projects.
According to recent reports, Microsoft and OpenAI have teamed up to build a data center to meet the growing demand for AI. By 2028, the cost of this project could reach up to $100 billion, allowing Microsoft and OpenAI to reduce its dependence on NVIDIA.
According to a report from The Next Platform:
“The first thing to note about the rumored ‘Stargate’ system that Microsoft plans to build to support the computational needs of its large-scale language model partner OpenAI is that the people talking (Reported by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman), he’s talking about data centers, not supercomputers, because he’s talking about data centers, and perhaps multiple data centers in a region with as many as 1 million XPU computing devices. Because it becomes a supercomputer. ”
The Stargate project will provide more computing power to Microsoft and OpenAI if the plans’ reports prove accurate. No word yet on whether the data center will be located at Cheyenne Mountain.
More PCs can be upgraded to Windows 11
After years of work from Microsoft, more PCs can now upgrade to Windows 11. This move does not represent a change in Microsoft’s policy regarding minimum requirements for Windows 11. More PCs can now upgrade to Microsoft’s latest operating system because the company has lifted compatibility.
Some systems have been blocked from upgrading to Windows 11 for more than two years due to issues related to 11th Generation Intel Core processors and Intel Smart Sound Technology when running on Windows 11. This issue has since been resolved, paving the way for Windows 11 to be removed. Maintain compatibility.
