Boxer Mike Tyson’s bid to become marijuana kingmaker has taken another turn as California’s Cannabis Enforcement Agency has ordered a statewide recall of two of his “disputed” cannabis flower products. .
It is perhaps unfortunate for the legal cannabis industry that boxer Mike Tyson has chosen to become one of its celebrity faces. Indeed, he served time for rape in 1992, but then piled on another rape charge last year. When he launched a range of ear-shaped foods with a “joke” based on him biting Evander Holfield’s ear during a 1997 boxing match, it certainly seemed in bad taste. Then, when Tyson visited San Francisco on April 20, 2022, he got into trouble for punching a man on the plane and fleeing from San Francisco.
Now, there are more problems with Mike Tyson’s foray into legal marijuana. The state regulatory agency, known as the California Department of Cannabis Control (DCC), announced a statewide recall of Tyson’s cannabis flower products “due to the presence of Aspergillus sp.” Found in multiple Tyson Undisputed Cannabis Flower products. (Aspergillus is a fungus that can cause infections in the lungs and sinuses.)
There’s no disputing Tyson’s flower line of branded cannabis products. Not all Undisputed products were recalled, only his two brands of flowers (or “buds”) sold under the strain names Toad and Tadpoles.
Tyson doesn’t grow his own cannabis; he has a branding deal for cannabis grown by a company called Northern Emerald.
And not all of Tyson’s Undisputed Toads and tadpole bags will be recovered. According to D.C.C. This recall only applies to his 8-bag products with the batch number HT-9668-1 listed on the label and packaged after August 23, 2023.
The DCC advises that if you have purchased this contaminated Tyson cannabis, you should “throw away the product or return it to your retail store for proper disposal. If you experience any symptoms or side effects, please contact us immediately. Please contact your doctor.”
Three dispensaries or delivery services in SF have been confirmed to have stocked mold-contaminated batches: Golden Gate Cannabis Company, Grass Roots, and delivery service California Wellness.
California cannabis product recalls, while not unheard of, are fairly rare. In the first quarter of 2024, the DCC ordered 11 product recalls.
