March is a month full of ups and downs for movie-going. Most of the holiday prestige productions have left theaters, and the spring/summer season hasn’t even started yet. But never fear! Seattle’s repertory theaters show a wide variety of films from all eras, giving you a huge selection to choose from. This is just a sample.

“Dune: Part 2” appears to be firmly camped at SIFF Cinema Downtown, the former Cinerama, for most, if not all, of March, but SIFF has plenty of other productions as well. A small theater (complete with love seats!) in the U district hosts German dramas such as “teachers lounge‘ will be performed from March 1st to March 12th. The story of an idealistic seventh-grade teacher (Leonie Benesch) whose world is thrown into turmoil when one of her students’ boyfriends is accused of theft. The film was nominated for Germany’s International Film Award at this year’s Academy Awards and has won at several international film festivals. This month’s Grand Illusion features Molly Manning Walker’show to have sex” is the story of three British teenagers on vacation, which won the Un Certain Regard award at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. It will be held from March 8th to 17th.

As always, the Capitol Hill nonprofit will screen an eclectic mix of old and new films. A new dimension: Vietnamese director Pham Thien Anh’s dreamlike drama “Inside the yellow cocoon shell” (March 6-10) won the Camera d’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. Deborah Stratman’s science documentarylast thing” (March 13-17). and artist Martin Sims’african despair” (through March 3), a recent MFA graduate endures a grueling final 24 hours at art school. Archive Among his presentations are his 1995 drama on MaciukasowitzLaene” (through March 3), set in an immigrant group on the outskirts of Paris, and Nina Menkes’ 1991 Las Vegas drama “queen of diamonds” (March 6th to 10th) will be screened in a newly restored version.

To commemorate James Baldwin’s 100th birthday this year, the Beacon will beI heard it through the grapevine(March 8-14) is a newly restored 1982 documentary in which the author and activist traces the civil rights movement in the 1960s South. Also on Columbia City Theater’s wonderfully colorful calendar this month is Tsai Ming-liang’s 1994 modernist play,Viv Lamour” (March 11 and 13), Brian De Palma’s 1974 cult classic “phantom of the paradise” (March 22-23), Roy Del Ruth’s 1947 Christmas drama “it happened on fifth avenue” (March 17), Spike Jonze’s surreal 1999 comedy “Being John Malkovich” (March 29-30).
