Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis broke the men’s pole vault world record for the eighth time by clearing 6.24 meters (20 feet 5 inches) at the Diamond League opening round in Xiamen, China, on Saturday.
Duplantis, 24, broke the world record for consecutive outdoor events.
At his previous outdoor competition, the Diamond League Finals held in September in Eugene, Oregon, he cleared 6.23 meters on his 16th attempt since setting the record on February 25, 2023.
He failed six times during the winter indoor season with a score of 6.24, but cleared it in his first outdoor attempt in Xiamen in 2024.

“The indoor season wasn’t what I wanted,” he said. “I feel like it was all over the place and a little more sloppy than I would have liked. So I think we brought a little bit of that fire from inside.”
Duplantis’ next hurdle, 6.25 meters, is significant as he could become the first man to clear 20 feet, 6 inches.
