NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. — A 100-year-old family-owned business in central New York is reaching a major milestone.
Morehouse Appliance, located on Seneca Turnpike in New Hartford, is celebrating its 130th anniversary. Founded in 1894, Morehouse Appliances is the oldest consumer electronics retailer serving central New York.
The company was originally founded in Utica in 1894 by Henry D. Morehouse as HD Morehouse.
The store is currently run by Dan Morehouse, the great-grandson of founder Henry Morehouse.
So what has kept the business running over the years?
“Adaptability,” says Morehouse Appliance GM Chris Kolosek.
“The first Morehouse actually made a living making horseshoes. When Henry Ford brought out the car, his business wasn’t doing very well. So he adapted and made stovepipe tins. We started crafting, we started selling stoves, and we’re actually one of the oldest Maytag dealers in the United States, and the support of the community has really helped us succeed here. ”
To thank its customers, Morehouse Appliance held an in-store anniversary celebration with giveaways, refreshments, demos and more.
