LITTLE ROCK, AR – Netflix’s new series “Unlocked: A Jail Experiment” is getting a lot of attention, both positive and negative.
This eight-part series is about an experiment at the Pulaski County Jail in Little Rock that gave inmates freedom and privileges within the unit.
For Sheriff Eric Higgins, the purpose of granting freedom and privileges such as free calls is to show detainees that they can act like people, not criminals. He hopes this will help them in their lives.
Jordan Parkinson is one of the inmates featured on the show. He was charged with capital murder in the 2022 death of Jadon Shackelford in Little Rock.
Jadon Shackelford’s mother, Hayley Shackelford, said it was difficult for her to watch the show because she felt no justice for one of the men accused of killing her son as part of a free experiment. Ta.
“I haven’t finished it all yet. I’ve started and stopped a lot,” Shackelford said.
Fifty prisoners participated in the experiment. They had spent 23 hours behind a locked door, with no locked door and no police officers.
“I understand that they’re trying to make a show, but there are real people involved, and one of the people who killed my son was experimenting on things that I could never do, but they’re giving me gifts and… There are real people out there who are hurting to see people receiving free calls and things like that. Please call your child again,” Ms Shackelford said.
Regarding the motive for the experiment, she said, “I don’t think someone who commits such a violent crime should receive any sort of reward.”
She said it was painful to watch the series, saying, “It does something for me to watch someone take their child away.”
Shackelford said she wished she had been told about the series before it aired instead of being blindsided. And she’s not alone. Because she said she knows she’s not alone in watching the show and feeling the feeling of a wound being torn apart.
“If it’s hurting me, I’m sure other family members are doing the same,” she said.
The experiment lasted 6 weeks. Jordan Parkinson was released on bond.
The series premiered on April 10th and is currently available on Netflix.
