rear monk Even after the show ended airing in America in 2009, creator Andy Breckman never stopped taking notes and coming up with movie ideas for Tony Shalhoub’s alter ego. But it wasn’t until the pandemic “set things in motion,” Breckman recalled during a panel on Deadline’s Contenders TV.
That’s when Shalhoub and his wife, Brooke Adams, made a four-minute film about Monk during lockdown, and it got them off the ground. Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie. The film, released on Peacock in December, follows a San Francisco-based OCD detective who returns to solve one final, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly. is drawing.
“At first, it seemed a little dangerous,” Shalhoub said. “We wanted to up the stakes and not just come back with episode 126. We wanted to make this more special. We wanted to make it bigger and make it a kind of event. I wanted to.”
Reprising the character that helped Shalhoub win three of his four Emmy Awards was “not scary, but it was a little daunting,” the actor said. “But Andy came up with this great script and there was so much positive energy from Peacock. Everyone was so excited to revisit it. By the time we got into the first day of filming, we were totally sold on it. I feel better. It didn’t take long for me to get back to normal.”
In addition to Shalhoub, the film features several original cast members from the series, including Ted Levine, Traylor Howard, Jason Gray-Stanford, Melora Hardin, and Hector Elizondo.New cast includes Caitlin McGee (home economicss) Molly Evans and James Purefoy (sex education) as Rick Eden.
And good news. monk Fans: Breckman is a completely “explore another chapter” game. “This is my retirement plan,” he declared.
monk began airing in the United States in 2002 and ran for 125 episodes over eight seasons, with the series finale breaking ratings records in 2009 as the most-watched cable drama at the time.
