In a bit of a reversal, seniors are the trendsetters in Wellington Bay senior living communities, followed by younger generations.
Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States, with an estimated 4.8 million players. This game, which combines badminton, table tennis, and tennis, was previously played mainly among older people. The game is increasingly attracting younger generations due to its social aspects, accessibility, inclusivity, ease of learning, and pure fun.
Wellington Bay first opened a year ago. Due to the popularity of the sport, two pickleball courts were built in his area. Some of our most popular amenities include a bocce ball court, free admission outdoor pool, indoor pool, 65,000 square foot clubhouse, library, art room, and more. Wellington Bay residents have complimentary access to golf at Wellington National Golf Club through senior living community arrangements.
Wellington Bay residents decided early on to start a pickleball club as one of many resident-led programs in the area.
The club’s president is Artie Linworth, a resident with a passion for the game.
Recently, national pickleball star Alex Popp-Moldova came to teach pickleball to residents.
“I’ve been taking lessons from Alex at PGA National,” Linworth said. “Alex is a nationally ranked player, a US Pickleball Open bronze medalist, and the coach of one of the best pickleball teams in the United States. He really knows how to make learning a productive and fun experience. .”
Pop Moldovans came to Wellington Bay to hold two clinics for residents, one for beginners and one for intermediate.
“He helped residents learn important skills for success on the court, conducted drills, and ended the day with round robin play,” Linworth said.
After seeing residents enjoying pickleball and seeing their skills improve, some Wellington Bay staff expressed an interest in learning how to play.
“Residents volunteered to help guide our staff,” Linworth said. “We already have great camaraderie and playing pickleball together will only add to the great spirit and atmosphere here in beautiful Wellington Bay.”
Wellness Director Melissa Clark was excited about the opportunity to learn the game.
“I would say our residents are great pickleball players,” she said. “They teach us not only the rules of the game, but also the nuances like how to be safe, how to be in the right place at the right time, and the best way to hit and place the ball.” Personally, I still have a long way to go, but I am truly grateful for their guidance on the court.”
Concierge director Dominic McDonald agreed. “I really enjoy interacting with the residents. I’m new to this game, but I can understand why so many people love it. , I feel safe and secure,” she said.
Some staff members have begun to try their hand at pickleball, offering unsolicited instruction to friendly recipients without receiving formal training from residents. Artie said after seeing some of Wellington Bay’s dining servers “getting into pickles.” “We sent them a link to pickleball tips that they can watch online and get ready for self-improvement,” he said.
