Netflix, the hugely popular streaming platform, previously prohibited people from signing up and paying for its service through the App Store subscription option on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV devices. But those who were already paying that way ended up continuing to watch the latest must-see TV shows and movies. But it was only a matter of time before things changed. And now it’s starting to happen.
According to a new report from The Streamable, Netflix has started reaching out to users who pay for its streaming service via the App Store, warning them that time is running out. Subscribers will need to find a new way to pay for their Netflix subscriptions if they want to maintain access to the streamer’s growing content library.

The reason for this move is simple. Because Netflix doesn’t want to pay Apple. As with other apps and services available through the App Store, Apple receives a portion of all payments made through the App Store payment system. Netflix is warning users that they need to switch to another payment method outside of the App Store because they know they’re giving up a lot of money that would be better left in their own coffers. Some regions have started sending emails and others will surely follow.
This has been going on for a long time, as Netflix stopped allowing customers to sign up using the App Store’s billing options in 2018, even though people could have been forced to switch payment options much earlier. It is no exaggeration.
