Netflix has been really ramping up its epic historical dramas recently, adding a full Vikings series. And now there’s another critically acclaimed show available to stream in full. Black Sails has taken on the streaming giant.
The show originally aired from 2014 to 2017 and has everything you need to fill the gap in Game of Thrones size. This is especially true for the first episode, which is directed by Neil Marshall, who also directed Game of Thrones’ famous water-splatter episode “Blackwater.”
Billed as a prequel to Treasure Island, Black Sails depicts a conflict between pirate factions attempting to plunder and control New Providence despite the onslaught of the British Empire.
There were four seasons in total, and the show portrayed a number of real-life pirates, including Benjamin Hornigold, Jack Rackham, and the feared Blackbeard.
Black Sails, which originally aired on Starz, came to Netflix and was quite the hit, with an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Daily Express said of the show, “Essentially, this is a pirate drama quite unlike any other. As one of the conquering women says, “You’re so full of surprises.” .”It has said.
The Guardian said, “It’s worth watching just to see this cleverly constructed story build toward a bomb that, for once, really changes everything.”
The New York Times said, “Black Sails may be full of pirates and prostitutes, but in reality they strive to earn respect, whether from unruly crew members or from polite society.” “This is the purpose,” he wrote.
Newsday evaluated it as follows: “The story is complex enough to hold your attention, but not too complicated. It’s always the action that replaces the chatter, and here that’s what you really need to see.”
Black Sails is currently available to stream in its entirety on Netflix in the US and the MGM Plus Amazon channel in the UK.
