I’m one of the longtime Netflix subscribers who pays for the streaming service through Apple’s App Store. It’s a shame for me. Netflix has announced that it is eliminating this billing option and has begun notifying people that they need to start paying directly to the streaming giant. As first reported by The Streamable, the move will affect people in the United States and Canada, as well as the rest of the world. I haven’t received this email from Netflix yet, but it’s probably only a matter of time before I get one and am forced to switch.
Why Netflix is discontinuing App Store charges
Large companies have had trouble selling in-app purchases and subscriptions through Apple’s App Store for years. This is because Apple collects a 30% fee on every in-app purchase you make through the App Store. Apple lowers your share to 15% if you subscribe for more than a year, but companies like Netflix and Spotify aren’t willing to pay even that.
A few years ago, Netflix removed the option for subscribers to sign up and pay through the App Store. However, if you were making payments through the App Store at the time of this change, you can continue making payments without interruption. Quite a few people continued to pay for his Netflix through Apple, and some were left at the old price of $9.99 per month. All of this will be discontinued as Netflix has decided to stop charging on the App Store completely. If you want to keep using Netflix, you’ll have to pay Netflix directly and you’ll pay the full price.
I’m not excited about the change. I’ve never really liked storing payment information across multiple sites, especially for recurring payments. If all your subscriptions are in the App Store, canceling is much easier. Not only is it convenient to see all your subscriptions in one place, but canceling is a three-step process. This is much better than the complicated cancellation process on the internet that repeats the words “Are you sure?” which makes you feel all kinds of guilty. Please check the screen before actually unsubscribing.
I’ve always subscribed to Netflix, but I’ve changed it many times, partly because I didn’t want to lose access to my App Store bill.Once that disappears, I’ll probably stop watching live-action movies. Avatar: The Last Airbender Please adapt and then cancel your subscription.
