For the first time, a Hollywood director has revealed new details about Heath Ledger’s tragic death.
The Australian actor died in January 2008 from an accidental drug overdose in his New York apartment.
Heath was only 28 years old.
16 years later, Hollywood director Stephen Gaghan is born, including films starring Robert Downey Jr. doolittle Matthew McConaughey’s vehicle Moneyspoke about the shocking phone call he received from Heath’s father Kim Shorty after the actor’s death.
Gaghan recently appeared on Malcolm Gladwell’s podcast Historical Revisionist: Development Hell – A program that explores projects that never got screened.
The director was planning to make a movie called blink Co-starring with Heath, adapted from Gladwell’s book.
Gaghan explained on the podcast how Kim found a copy of the film’s script next to Heath’s body.
After arriving at her son’s apartment, Kim, who they met for the first time, revealed that she saw the phone number written on the script and called him.
Recalling the heartbreaking phone call, Gagan said: “My father and the man closest to my father in his professional life were there with the body, and our script was in bed with him. [Gladwell’s] The book was on the bedside table.
“I think my phone number was scripted. As you can imagine, they were shocked and dialed the number, but I don’t know why.”
He “collapsed” upon hearing the shocking news.
“I’m at the airport with my wife and we’re going from one place to another and we literally just fall down. It’s never happened to me before or since,” the director added. .
“My foot went out from under me. I was like, ‘What?’ and I literally sat down.”
“The feelings, what they were going through, I should never have been a party to it, but as a human being, or just a person who cares, I was just there listening, and my wife… was looking at me.”
“I remember her face, but I was speechless. I just listened, listened, listened. It was really, really sad. And I still am. For me, all I could do was put a pin in it. There was no.”
The director had plans to make “a bunch of movies” with Heath, but unfortunately they never materialized.
“I met Heath Ledger and immediately became very, very close to him. I had a really special connection with him. That was unusual for me, and it was really special.”
