One of 2024’s most diabolical, twisted, bizarre, and arguably most original films is finally arriving this weekend. It’s also kind of funny in a demonic sense.
Late nights spent with the devil, With a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this movie is a must-see for anyone who enjoys quirky horror movies filled with dark comedy. The film, written, directed and edited by Cameron Cairns and Colin Cairns, stars David Dastmalchian as late-night show host Jack Ellroy. Night Owl with Jack Delroy.
Delroy, once a rising star, has increasingly fallen behind in the ratings battle with contemporary Johnny Carson. Tonight Show. After a tragic event forces him off the air for a while, he returns to the show and does everything he can to reignite his popularity and fame.
This movie is centered around a live broadcast. night owl On Halloween, 1977, the year of the Lord, Delroy hosts a variety show with an occultism theme. He has a psychic who can “communicate” with the dead. A skeptical former magician who tries to debunk paranormal phenomena. Parapsychologist June Ross-Mitchell (Laura Gordon) then takes her young charge, Lily (Ingrid Torelli), to have a special conversation with the host.
Of course, I won’t spoil all the surprises. Suffice it to say, it involves a demonic church, demonic possession, and a special guest named Mr. Riggles. This heady mix of 1970s showbiz and mystical occultism creates a deeply creepy concoction that’s equal parts terrifying and darkly funny. This is one of the strangest movies I’ve seen in a while. On the other hand, the campy, vintage aesthetic of the 1970s is really great. Watching late night TV really makes you feel like you’re back in time.
I won’t say more for fear of spoilers, but here’s the trailer:
Fun fact: Dastmalthian was cast by the film’s producers, the Cullines Brothers, after reading an article he had written for Fangoria magazine about a local TV horror host.
Late nights spent with the devil is currently streaming on Shudder and AMC+. Highly recommended.
