According to the Japan Motion Picture Producers Association, Japan’s box office revenue in 2023 reached 221,482 million yen ($1.48 billion), an increase of 3.9% from the previous year.

The top box office revenue was “Original Slam Dunk,” released in December 2022, with 15.87 billion yen. “One Piece Film Kurenai”, which will be released in 2022, took first place in the same year, making it the second consecutive year that an anime film distributed by Toei took the top spot.
Last year, only three anime movies exceeded the 10 billion yen mark.
The other two films were “Super Mario Bros.” (14.02 billion yen) and “Detective Conan: The Black Iron Submarine” (13.88 billion yen), which was the first time that anime movies dominated.
The number of movies released in Japan in 2023 will be 1,232, an increase of 89 from the previous year.
This is the second highest number after 2019, before the pandemic.
