After a winter of back-to-back awards including the Emmys, Golden Globes, and Grammys, the Academy Awards ceremony for all of those awards is just around the corner. The 96th Oscars may be a coronation for Oppenheimer, who has been nominated in the top 13 categories, but other films such as Barbie, Murderers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things are among the top nominees. The film is also nominated.
Here’s what you need to know about this year’s show.
When is the Oscars?
The Oscar ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 10th at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony will begin at 7pm ET, an hour earlier than usual, and will be broadcast live on ABC. The pre-show begins at 6:30pm ET. Here’s an early reminder to set your watch accordingly. Today is the first day of summer time in the United States.
Who will attend the Oscars?
Last year’s big acting award winners, including Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, Ke Hui Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis, will all return to present at the show (a tradition). The Academy also announced that “Scarface” co-stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino will also present awards (though it has not been announced whether they will co-star). Other celebrities scheduled to appear on the Dolby Stage include Zendaya, Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Lange, Nicolas Cage, Mahershala Ali, Sam Rockwell and Luptia Nyong’o. More names will be revealed as the show date approaches.

Who is hosting the Oscars?
Jimmy Kimmel, who hosted last year’s ceremony, will be hosting the ceremony for the fourth time. This puts Kimmel alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Jack Lemmon, who also appeared four times, and joins Johnny Carson (five times), Billy Crystal (nine times), and Billy Crystal (nine times) as repeat Oscar hosts. Bob Hope (11) was the only one to do so. “I’ve always dreamed of hosting the Oscars exactly four times,” Kimmel said.
What movies are nominated for Best Picture at the 2024 Oscars?
The 10 nominees for Best Picture are: Anatomy of a Fall; Barbie, Holdovers. Flower Moon Murderer. Maestro; Oppenheimer; past life; poor thing. and zones of interest.
Who is your favorite?
Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, is the frontrunner. Nolan, my favorite director, is also on the brink of winning his first Oscar. The Best Actress category could be a showdown between Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Emma Stone (Poor Things). If Gladstone wins, she will become the first Native American to win an Oscar. The Best Actor award could also be a close battle between Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) and Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers). This is the first win for both. DaVine Joy Randolph, who co-stars with Giamatti, is likely to win Best Supporting Actress, while Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) is expected to win Best Supporting Actor. His closest competitor is considered to be Barbie doll Ryan Gosling.
What happened to the “Barbie” snub?
Barbie, the biggest box office hit of 2023, received eight nominations, but much of the discussion revolves around the nominations it didn’t win. Greta Gerwig was eliminated from the director category, and Margot Robbie lost out on the best actress award. Some see these omissions as reflecting the misogyny parodied in Barbie, while others point out that comedies have historically been judged harshly at the Academy Awards. Barbie nominations include Best Adapted Screenplay (Gerwig and Noah Baumbach), Best Supporting Actress for America Ferrera, and Best Original Song nominees for Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For” and Mark Two categories are included: “I’m Just Ken” by Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.
Are there any changes to this year’s Oscars?
Recent Oscars have been marked by incidents, including slaps, hoopla, and controversy over awards being presented live on TV, but this year’s show (aside from starting an hour earlier) has no major changes. There wasn’t. All awards will be broadcast live (although honorary awards will remain separate for the previous non-televised Governor’s Awards). The Academy is adding a new award to Best Casting, but that trophy won’t be awarded until the 2026 Oscars.
What else should I look for?
Composer John Williams has been nominated for an Academy Award for his record 49th Academy Award and 54th overall for “Indiana Jones” and “Dial.” Godzilla will be attending the Oscars for the first time, with Godzilla His Minus One expected to be nominated for Best Visual Effects. And for the first time, two films in languages other than English were selected for Best Picture. The German-language Auschwitz drama “Zone of Interest” and the French courtroom drama “Anatomy of a Fall.”
