“Poor Things,” nominated for Best Picture, is coming to Hulu ahead of the Academy Awards ceremony.
The film is a Frankenstein-esque tale directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, and Willem Dafoe, and will be available on Hulu on March 7th. It was nominated for 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Director.
“Director Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone tell the extraordinary story and fantasy of Vera Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought to life by the brilliant and unconventional scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). “The story depicts the evolution of the world,” the synopsis reads. “Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she lacks, she embarks on a whirlwind adventure across the continent with the brilliant and prodigal lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo). On the Run. Freed from the prejudices of her time, Vera remains steadfast in her purpose of supporting equality and liberation.”
Ruffalo was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, and screenwriter Tony McNamara is in charge of the adaptation. The film also received nominations for original score, production design, cinematography, makeup and hairstyling, costume design, and film editing.
While Stone is considered by many Oscar pundits to be the favorite for Best Actress, Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone is also being hailed as a front-runner. This will be one of the closest races at this year’s Academy Awards, which will be held on March 10th.
The film won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy earlier this year, and Stone took home the trophy for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy.
