- Best Buy, Amazon, and even Meta are no longer stocking the Meta Quest 2 256GB unit.
- Meta permanently reduced the price of Quest 2 on January 1, 2024.
- Meta Quest 3 Lite is rumored to be released in 2024 at a cheaper price than Quest 3.
It’s been less than two months since Meta slashed the price of the Meta Quest 2, but the 256GB model may be gone almost forever. As first seen on UploadVR, as of this writing, Amazon, Best Buy, and even Meta are running out of models.
Newegg and B&H Photo seem to be two of the last major retailers still stocking it, which is no surprise given the great prices. The Meta Quest 2 256GB model retails for just $299, and even with twice the storage he costs just $50 more than the 128GB model.
Ever since the price of the Quest 2 dropped permanently earlier this year, there has been speculation that Meta was using the price drop to liquidate inventory and make room for the upcoming Meta Quest 3 Lite. . Now that the 256GB model looks set to be phased out for good, many are wondering if the launch of Meta’s next budget headset is closer than originally thought.
The Meta Quets 3 Lite is said to be powered by the same chipset as the $499 Meta Quest 3, but makes concessions elsewhere to achieve a lower price. Rumor has it that this headset will continue to use the same Fresnel (pronounced four-nel) lenses as the Quest 2, making the headset thicker than the more expensive Meta Quest 3.
Additionally, the Meta Quest 3 Lite likely won’t come with a depth sensor and will probably have a lower-resolution camera. However, we still expect the headset to have a color pass-through vision as Meta continues to shift its assets to be developed more heavily for mixed reality.
Get it before it’s gone! Meta Quest 2 is one of the best VR headsets ever, with console-like easy setup and thousands of great games to play.
