McIlroy faced Max Homa, Lexi Thompson and Rose Chan in Match 9 in Florida.
Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy won a nearest-to-the-pin tie-break at The Match 9 Skins game in the US, raising £1.26 million for charity.
The world No. 2 player competed against Max Homa and LPGA stars Lexi Thompson and Rose Chan in a 12-hole event held under lights at The Park Golf Course.
McIlroy secured victory with a shot on the first extra hole after winning three skins for £630,000.
“It was a really cool night,” said McIlroy, 34.
“I just think [I will remember] It was so much fun to be able to come out here with Max, Rose and Lexi and play in such a great facility. ”
McIlroy raised £630,000 and then, as the quartet was about to play the final hole, an unidentified friend put in $500,000 (£394,000) to bring the total remaining stake to £1.26 million. announced that it would donate.
After McIlroy missed his eagle putt and lost the birdie, Homa matched him with a long birdie putt.
The four players then returned to the fairway from about 100 yards for a tiebreaker.
McIlroy took the lead and held his wedge shot to just over 4 feet, but none of his opponents were able to beat him.
The only other player to win a skin was Thompson, who sank a long eagle putt on the second hole to win £157,000.
On the fourth hole, players had to choose only one club to use for the entire hole, and McIlroy used a 5-wood from tee to green for par and his first skin.
This is McIlroy’s second appearance in The Match Series, having lost to Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas along with Tiger Woods in the seventh tournament.
This is the first time a female player has participated in the Charity Skins Game, and Thompson will be joined by 20-year-old Chan, who won in her LPGA debut at the Mizuho Americas Open last June.
