Apple released FineWoven iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands to much fanfare last fall as an eco-friendly alternative to leather accessories. However, buyers soon complained that the material was prone to stains, scuffs, and other durability issues. I also felt that the FineWoven felt much less premium than the leather lineup it replaced, despite Apple charging the same price.
according to Twitter leak Kosutami, Apple abandoned the effort and the FineWoven production line was shut down. The company will likely try again with another leather alternative option like Alcantara.
It was perhaps significant that Apple downplayed its FineWoven rollout last week, even as it touted the environmental progress it had made over the past 12 months.
We’ll probably have to wait for the release of the new Apple Watch and iPhone 16 in September to see if Apple has a FineWoven replacement in its lineup. That’s because it’s probably time for the company to update its case and watch band lineup next.
