San Jose game bar owners say they’re tired of repeated robberies costing them tens of thousands of dollars.
Guildhouse opened on South First Street in 2021, providing a space for people to gather and do whatever they want, including playing games, cards, drawing, and enjoying food and drinks.
“This is the saloon, and the guest room is on the other side,” said founder Kevin Wick. “The saloon has a party-like atmosphere, with people playing games and drinking beer. It’s pretty loud. And when you walk into the parlor, the atmosphere completely changes.”
But Guildhouse owners have dealt with the problem of burglary at many Bay Area businesses. In the three years since the store opened, the number has grown to eight.
The latest incident occurred late last month and was recorded on security cameras. The thieves broke through the back door, entered the office, and made off with the safe, all while avoiding alarms and sensors.
Until now, they have remained silent to avoid being seen as weak. But owners say they are fed up with it and are now speaking out.
“I think our goal is to reduce the frequency with which something like this happens,” Wick said. “Not just for us, but for our neighbors.”
It caught the attention of the mayor and the city’s new police chief. They showed up late Friday afternoon and vowed to help with more foot and bike patrols. We can expect to increase the number of employees in the future.
“We will be speaking with law enforcement to ensure we follow up on any leads that may lead to the identification of the suspect,” San Jose Police Chief Paul George said.
The store can get pretty crowded on Friday nights, and frequent customers say it feels like a community.
“I love this place,” said San Jose resident Ethan Peek. “It’s a really fun place to come and hang out.”
The owners said they have fortified the entrance and provided nighttime security.
