In this post-pandemic era, Bali is shifting its focus more towards wellness, with more people, including Singaporean celebrities, heading to Bali to invest in wellness-related projects.
One of them is actor and host Alan Wu. The 51-year-old is still based in Singapore, but is working on a new wellness project, Lodge in the Woods, with entrepreneur Bernard Teo in Bali.
“While I will always call Singapore my home, I believe that you should never be satisfied with the status quo and be afraid to try something new.As I get older and my children… Now that I’m a young man, I started thinking about what else I could do, and an opportunity arose to visit my friend Bernard in Bali.He came up with a very unique project: a lodge in Bali. We launched and built Woods,” he said. Yahoo Southeast Asia.
“After my first visit in January last year, I immediately saw a lot of synergies and potential to grow the business. From there, I decided to work with him to really assess the possibilities of doing more together. I started traveling to Bali more.”
Located in the quaint village of Kava Kaba, 15 minutes from Bali’s resort town of Canggu, Lodge in the Woods is an upscale wellness sanctuary built around trees and described in the brochure as a “simple yet elegant brutalist modern retreat. Architectural Design”. . With only 6 guest rooms (starting from $230 per night), this is a quiet and peaceful place where you can spend a relaxing time surrounded by nature.
The reserve has its own farm, with rescued animals ranging from horses to goats, chickens and rabbits roaming freely through the space. We also have a garden where we grow our own vegetables for a carefully selected plant-based menu for our guests. Meals are eaten at long communal tables in the lobby next to the magnesium-rich pool, where guests can mingle and develop camaraderie.
While at the reserve, guests can also enjoy a variety of complimentary activities, including cycling to the rice fields, sailing on fishing boats, touring the farm and feeding the animals, walking horses, and planting and harvesting vegetables on the farm. Masu. Do yoga or meditation at River House.
Mr. Wu’s role will be in marketing the business, in addition to developing fitness and wellness programs and initiatives for guests and customers.
“Bernard has always had a special affinity for Bali, with its rich history, culture and customs, for more than 20 years since he built his first villa,” he said of his project partner Theo.
“After more than 30 years in the fashion industry, he was ready to embark on a new direction in life and focus on simple living and environmental protection. Bali, along with its countryside and its nature, has always been his favorite destination. It has always held a special place in my heart, and with its slow-paced island lifestyle, it was a natural choice to build Lodge in the Woods there.”
This is not Theo’s first adventure in Bali. In his 1997 year during the Asian financial crisis, he built his first villa in the then very undeveloped and rural Canggu area near Echo Beach.
Creating a more sustainable life for our children’s future
In addition to being a hub for wellness tourism, Bali’s natural bounty and less hectic pace of life are a draw for fellow host Claire Jedrek, who plans to move to the island with her young children later this year. It also attracts people like Yuei Tan, the driver’s husband.
The couple took over a five-bedroom villa called Villa Kamran, which is set on a 6,000 square foot plot of land near Pererenan Beach. The cost is “a little more than the price of a 30-year-old HDB apartment in Bishan,” but he recently renovated it for less than S$30,000. The couple is currently building another home in another part of Bali, scheduled to be completed in mid-2025.
“At the beginning of 2023, we both had incidents with random people who were unnecessarily angry,” Jedrek shared. “People are often very unfriendly on[Singapore’s]roads, and as drivers and cyclists, I didn’t want to get drawn into the wrath of this city and wanted real change.”Reset .
“Blocking out the noise was a big driver. Even conversations about my children’s schools were always about how they should be educated and which school they should attend to have the best relationships in their lives. We want our children to be children a little more, to be curious enough to love learning, and to move away from city life and become individuals. If it means being more conscious and aware, that’s perfect for us.”
Jedrek and Tan considered other locations before deciding on Bali. Bali is close to Singapore and it’s cheap to fly back to the city-state where I still work. “I thought about Austria, but it was too far away. Kuala Lumpur felt that way. Even after 17 years, I want to continue working in Singapore, which I love, so Australia is still a little too far away,” Jedrek said.
Mr Tan said: “While we love Singapore, there are certain values and values that we agree are more important for our children, such as sustainability and remaining curious about nature and the great outdoors. “I have experience,” he said.
“To be honest, I feel like living in a city, your priorities and the value of education are different. So we really wanted to shed a little bit and look at our surroundings differently and learn new cultures, different ways of doing things. You may be able to improve your thinking skills and creatively see things from a new perspective.
“Doing the same thing will only produce the same result. For us, it’s all about change, being diverse, and putting ourselves out there. That’s what we want our kids to understand and overcome.” I hope you will take home the best education you can from life. “
