Sony will cut about 900 jobs at its PlayStation division, representing about 8% of its global workforce, becoming the latest company to announce layoffs in the technology and gaming sector.
Sony cited changes in the industry as the reason for the reorganization.
“The industry is changing significantly and we need to prepare our business for what’s to come,” Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said in a blog post Tuesday. Ta. “We need to continue to meet the expectations of developers and gamers and drive future technology in gaming, so we have taken a step back to make sure we are ready to continue delivering the best gaming experience to our community. Tuesday’s layoffs come a month after Microsoft announced it would cut nearly 2,000 employees following its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Additionally, Riot Games, the developer of the popular multiplayer competitive game League of Legends, announced in January that it would lay off 11% of its staff.
The job cuts will occur in the Americas, Japan, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific.
PlayStation Studio will be permanently closed in London. Cuts are also produced at Firesprite studio. In addition, reductions will be made across various functions across Sony Interactive Entertainment in the UK, the company said.
Affected employees will receive severance pay.
“While these are difficult times, this does not indicate a lack of strength in our company, our brands or our industry,” Ryan said. “Our goal is to remain agile and adaptable, and remain focused on delivering the best gaming experience possible now and in the future.”
