Square Enix’s upcoming team shooter game Foamstars will include a small amount of AI art, the developer said.
Foamstars producer Kosuke Okaya said in an interview with VGC that the team “dabbled” with the AI program Midjourney, known as an AI tool for converting text into art, but the majority of the game was created by hand. He said he is doing so.
“Everything at the core of Foamstars, the core gameplay and what makes the game fun, is hand-crafted,” Okatani said.
The total AI-generated work in Foamstars accounts for “about 0.01 percent or less” of the game, according to the developer, and Okatani said Square Enix is ”experimenting” with the technology for future releases. He said he wanted to.
In a separate statement, Square Enix said the AI was used to “create an in-game album cover for music featured on the Foamstars soundtrack.” The developer further reiterated that the technology is being experimented with.
“In this example, we experimented with Midjourney using a simple prompt to generate an abstract image. We liked what was created, so we used it as the cover for the final album that players will see in-game. Everything else was written entirely by the development team.” .
The news comes weeks after Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu said in his annual New Year’s letter that the company would be “aggressive in applying AI.”
“Artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential impact has been the subject of primarily academic debate for some time,” he wrote. “However, with the introduction of his ChatGPT, which allows anyone to easily create sentences, translations, and engage in text-based interactions, generative AI quickly became popular.
“I believe generative AI has the potential not only to reshape what we make, but also to fundamentally change the processes by which we make it, including programming.”
But while Square Enix may be enthusiastic, many are still skeptical about AI and its impact on the industry as a whole. Most recently, Ned Luke, the voice actor for Michael de Santa in Grand Theft Auto 5, accused the Web3 company of using his voice as the basis for an unofficial AI chatbot.
