Grimm’s fairy tales are some of the most famous stories in the world. This collection of stories written by the German Grimm brothers Jacob and Wilhelm was published in his 1800s, but has since undergone numerous adaptations and continues to entertain children and adults alike. This includes everything from Rapunzel to Cinderella and other familiar characters from hit Disney movies and other forms of success.The latest addition to the list is a Netflix original anime Grimm Variations, an anthology series based on the same fairy tale spanning six episodes. Each episode tells a different story, with character designs by famous Japanese art group CLAMP and animation by Wit Studio. Now that it’s on Netflix, are these classic stories worth revisiting through a new lens?
Opening shot: Inside an idyllic bookshelf, we see the Brothers Grimm (Damian Mills and A.J. Beckles) discussing their new manuscript. Their sister Charlotte (Annalize Quinones) comes to see them and wants to hear about the latest fairy tale they are working on. The brothers describe the story as follows. Our view: This twist on the traditional Cinderella This story is much more interesting than many other adaptations have attempted. You’re constantly wondering what’s going on with Kiyoko from the get-go, as it’s never clearly explained at first, but once you realize what she’s doing, a creeping fear sets in.
This is a fun and exciting take on a story that, to many, seems repetitive, needlessly boring, and stagnant. Here we have a psychological thriller that challenges your perceptions and is easy to watch till the end.

Parting shot: Kiyoko talks to the doll while sitting in her bedroom with her latest conquest. While Kiyoko talks to the prince, the doll asks what game they’re going to play next and tells him all the “fun” things they’ll do as she goes to kiss the prince while blaring ominous music.
Sleeper Star: Makiko and Sawako, voiced by Shara Kirby and Reba Buhr, respectively, are interesting foils for Kiyoko, and both actresses find themselves in a position of self-importance, especially when they learn that they are not “evil” in this story. He brings incredible surprise and disbelief to his role.
The most pilot-like line: “I’ve been dreaming of this day! I’ve been waiting for so long to see what our new family will be like. I swear, I’ll be the best sister to either of you!” Kiyoko said. , the image of an eager child acting as if she’s excited to have a new family, but when she says this line, she’s more than a little evil. It colors the rest of the story and gives hints as to how things will actually turn out.
Our call: Let’s stream. Although there is little in the way of introductions or their involvement in each of the Grimm Brothers’ stories, the animated versions of the stories come to life with vibrant, eye-popping color. Cinderella Gorgeous visuals and plenty of reasons to stick around till the end bring it to life in a way that’s almost unrecognizable. If this is the direction this series is going, we might need a second season, STAT.
