Our view: Even if Mr. Rawlings is co-parenting and doesn’t seem to want to date women his own age, much less maintain relationships with young women, even if that woman is the mother of his son. It’s right to feel good, even if you don’t feel like it. But we don’t judge comedy by someone’s personal off-stage acts, right?
I think if they mention the act on stage, you can appreciate how sincerely and how humorously they do it. Rawlings candidly admits his shortcomings from time to time. Sometimes he wants to argue that he is right to pursue toxic or inappropriate relationships.
The most interesting relationship, of course, is Rawlings’ longtime friendship with the comedian who landed him on Netflix and executive produced his debut special. Although Rawlings is five years older than Chappelle, he has always seemed more like an eccentric sidekick to the insanely famous chappelle than an older brother. The relationship stems not only from Rawlings opening for Chappelle on tour nearly 20 years after the Comedy Central series, but also because Rawlings decided to move to Chappelle’s hometown of Yellow Springs, Ohio. It’s silly and funny, but it’s a nod to changing times without being unnecessarily cruel or unnecessary. I wish Chappelle was that transparent.
Our call: It might not win an award or make a top 10 list for comedy specials, but 40 minutes of straight comedy is a great way to take a break from the rigors of the real world and focus on a few laughs.
