Both CPG companies and their machinery suppliers are experimenting with artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in packaging, with some finding unique applications to enhance their business operations.
This is according to PMMI Business Intelligence’s 2024 report, “Transforming Packaging and Handling Operations,” which will share insights from industry executives at the 2024 Top to Top Summit.
Summit respondents shared first-hand success stories of deploying AI to improve operations, including:
- Use AI to forecast weather and environmental conditions three days before processing of temperature-sensitive products, then adjust processing based on the predictions.
- Use AI for job descriptions, PowerPoints, and other internal communications.
- Camera training for quality defects in facilities.
- Increased security at the facility. Respondents reported that an intelligent closed-circuit television security system detected an individual bringing a firearm into the plant and alerted senior management, who simultaneously called 911. The company initiated a lockdown of the facility and was able to arrest the individual.
- By analyzing and adjusting product ingredients, it saves the company $4 million per year.
- Conduct an initial review of your Terms of Use document.
This session explored the potential of AI and how companies in the packaging and processing industry are leveraging it, providing a real sense of the opportunities AI can bring, both now and in the future.
If used properly, AI offers the opportunity to address interoperability and standardization challenges and deliver significant performance and reliability improvements.
