Surgeons in other countries have also had the opportunity to use Apple Vision Pro and find it to be a revolutionary tool and a vast improvement over previous headsets.
Following the US example of Apple Vision Pro being used in surgery, a new example has come to light in Brazil. This headset was used during shoulder arthroscopic surgery to treat rotator cuff tears.
This surgery was reported by mac magazine, performed in Jaragu do Sul, Santo Domingo. Dr. Bruno Gobert and his team typically perform this type of surgery by inserting a camera into the injury site and looking at the screen.
Gobat previously used Microsoft’s Hololens to perform such surgeries. However, the Apple Vision Pro’s camera had much higher resolution and was better at handling bright light focused on the patient’s shoulder.
“Arthroscopic shoulder surgery uses a camera inside the joint, and the surgeon looks directly at the screen while performing the surgery,” Dr. Gobat said. “Using this device, I was able to view movie screen-sized images in high resolution and was able to see the patient’s exam and her 3D model in real time.”
He posted a video of the surgery on YouTube. This video shows the surgeon’s perspective using Apple Vision Pro, which greatly speeds up the procedure. Mr. Gobat could clearly see his notes, his x-rays of the patient, and his live camera all at the same time.
An app called MyMako was also used during the surgery. This is a 3D program that allows doctors to create a model of what they will perform in a surgery and make that model available in 3D during the actual surgery.
Despite previously being used in surgeries in the UK and now Brazil, Apple Vision Pro is currently only available for purchase in the US. Availability in other countries, possibly including China, will be announced soon.
