One reader was upset to hear that EA was putting the Dead Space series on hiatus, and feared the horror genre as a whole would suffer the same fate.
I can’t say I was surprised to hear that EA was putting Dead Space on ice. The developers did a great job with this remake, but it was clear from the lack of buzz outside of existing fans that it wasn’t going to sell well.In hindsight, EA did They’ve overestimated its popularity, and they, and other publishers who are paying attention, will be convinced that big-budget horror doesn’t sell. I hate to say it, but they’re probably right.
EA was trying to follow the success of the Resident Evil remake, but failed to realize that aside from the fact that Dead Space wasn’t as popular or good, Resident Evil wasn’t that scary. His seven-year-old Resident Evil 7 was the last time any game included serious horror elements, and only partially.
If I were Capcom, I would continue to tone down the horror elements. Because it’s clearly helping to buck the trend of horror games not selling well. That’s the opposite of what I want them to do, but I accept the fact that big budget horror will never happen.
This problem is now well known. Unlike movies, horror games aren’t necessarily cheaper to make than other types of games, but there are still a limited number of people who want to be scared or creeped out by a video game. In particular, they are almost always single-player, and that is not the fashion at the moment.
This is clearly why horror games these days are so mildly frightening. I never would have known that Alan Wake 2 was supposed to be a horror game if Remedy hadn’t told me, and the recent Alone In The Dark was pretty much the same, albeit interesting in some ways .
A horror game without the scares can still work because it’s basically a modern-day Resident Evil, but that means it needs to be supplemented with top-notch action and interesting characters/story. And other games and Dead Space didn’t do that either.
Like many horror fans, I have strong reservations about Bloober Team remaking Silent Hill, but one thing I can guarantee is that it won’t sell. If it stays true to the original, it’s too scary to appeal to the mass market, and the combat is never great or even the point of the game.
The early wave of survival horror games, led by Resident Evil and Silent Hill, may not have been necessarily cheap compared to other games, but they all came at a time when games were much cheaper to produce. Made. Just look at Silent Hill 1 to see how small the budget was. So I guess they had the leeway to be experimental and lean into horror.
There are some indie games that do that these days, but it feels like a lot of them are obsessed with making retro games that mimic old Resident Evil titles. Overall there is unfortunately little innovation, which is a shame considering how original other indie games are.
Maybe I’m just depressed because of what happened with Dead Space (which is ironic since it’s far from my favorite series), but I don’t feel like horror games have much of a future. not. Cost, risk of alienating players, and obsession with nostalgia have done more to kill an entire genre than any monster or knife-wielding maniac.
