The City of Tempe has adopted an Ethical Artificial Intelligence Policy to ensure the responsible and ethical use of AI.
TEMPE, Ariz. — The future of artificial intelligence (AI) is deep, and the city of Tempe is trying to stay ahead of the curve.
Tempe has adopted an ethical AI policy to ensure responsible use of new technology.
“We want to be intentional with the kind of work we do, and consider how these kinds of tools can have a positive impact on the community, or potentially negative.” We are seriously considering how this could impact our community in unexpected ways that could have consequences,” said the Tempe City Chief. Stephanie Deitrick, head of data and analytics, said:
Before new AI technologies can be used by city employees, they must first prove that they provide value to the community and are used transparently and fairly.
If the commission approves its use, the city will continue to perform quality control checks to prove it is accurate and fair.
“Unless we recognize it and address it, much of the data that these machines are trained on will have such biases,” says Professor Gary Merchant.
Merchant, dean of Arizona State University's Center for Law, Science and Innovation, said it's important to be aware of how technology works and why people use it.
“What the City of Tempe has done here is put some policies in place early on as this issue evolves so that instead of the city being in charge, you are in charge,” Merchant said. Stated.
Merchant said all organizations need to consider the use of AI, as the technology seen so far has only scratched the surface.
“This technology is advancing at an incredible rate. It's basically following an exponential curve,” Merchant said, adding, “What we've seen so far is just the beginning. It's not too much.''
