Netflix adds new movies and TV shows to its library every month. Here are some of July’s most anticipated new titles. (Note: The streaming service may change its schedule without notice. For more streaming recommendations, see the Netflix News Channel.) View the newsletter here.
Lost Seasons 1-6
Start streaming: July 1
This highly entertaining and often surprising sci-fi epic returns to Netflix on the 20th anniversary of its debut episode. What begins as the story of a group of seemingly random plane passengers who crash-land on an unknown island grows into a centuries-spanning saga over the course of six seasons as the castaways stumble upon the mysteries and history of their strange and dangerous new world. An innovative flashback structure balances adventures on the island with smaller stories about people’s lives before the crash. LOST functions as both a rich, character-driven drama and an addictive puzzle full of clues and curiosities. It will be interesting to see if a new generation of fans are as enthralled as early 2000s TV viewers were, and if they debate the show’s ending as much as they did.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F
Start streaming: July 3
Set 30 years after Beverly Hills Cop III, this long-planned sequel sees Eddie Murphy return to one of his most memorable roles, Axel Foley, a quick-witted, resourceful Detroit cop who somehow keeps returning to Los Angeles to solve cases. In Axel F, the old-school action hero shows up to help his estranged daughter, attorney Jane (Taylor Paige). While working with Jane’s ex-boyfriend, Detective Bobby Abbott (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Foley encounters many old friends, including Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold), John Taggart (John Ashton), Jeffrey Friedman (Paul Reiser) and Serge (Bronson Pinchot). The film is being touted as a full-on throwback to the 1980s, with big-budget stunts and R-rated jokes.
Cobra Kai Season 6, Part 1
Start streaming: July 18
The sequel series to “The Karate Kid” film series is coming to an end. The series will begin airing five episodes in July, with a three-part series of one season. “Cobra Kai” puts a slight twist on the 1984 original, replacing mean villain Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) with an underdog and hero Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) with a poor family. As the series progresses, these characters, and their kids who compete in a martial arts tournament, have evolved in ways that make their motivations and relationships more complex. While the story has expanded to encompass more parts of “The Karate Kid” mythos, it remains a surprisingly nuanced look at how people overcome the family histories and socio-economic circumstances that initially shaped them.
The Rise of Skywalker: A Love Story
Start streaming: July 19th
Anyone with a fear of heights should probably stay away from this dizzying documentary, which follows a famous Russian couple of “rooftoppers” who scale the tallest buildings they can and take photos to document their feats. Angela Nikolaou and Ivan Beerkus fell in love while pursuing their passion for extreme climbing. When their relationship began to falter, they tried to rekindle their romance by devising a plan to break into the upper floors of the world’s second-tallest skyscraper in Kuala Lumpur. Nikolaou and Beerkus documented many of their adventures and shared them on social media, so “The Rise of Skywalker” director Jeff Zimbalist and co-director Maria Bukonina have plenty of footage to work with. They tell a story that’s partly about the dangerous act of trespassing and partly about the couple who must learn to trust each other to survive this epic stunt.
The Decameron Season 1
Start streaming: July 25
Based on Giovanni Boccaccio’s famous 14th-century collection of short stories, The Decameron is set in Florence during the Black Death and tells the story of various noble families and their servants who seek refuge from the plague in a country villa. Created by Kathleen Jordan (best known for her wryly satirical novel Teenage Bounty Hunters), the miniseries features a diverse cast of comedic characters, including Zosia Mamet (Girls), Tanya Reynolds (Sex Education), Saoirse-Monica Jackson (Derry Girls) and Tony Hale (Arrested Development). Rather than the book’s broad anthology format, this version focuses on the misadventures of a group of houseguests, whose days of loneliness and anxiety lead to the breakdown of their social and sexual inhibitions.
