It’s understandable if the TV landscape feels a little dull these days, especially if you’re only used to watching scripted shows. In case you haven’t noticed, we’re currently living in the golden age of reality TV. A staple of American media for decades, unscripted TV has only doubled down on its dominance, and in recent years, its mayhem (both on and off) has only become even more fascinating. It’s stranger than fiction, for sure. And that’s exactly why the best reality TV is so compelling. Amid the fights, romance, heartbreak, credit cards, tears, and more, we are confronted with the worst aspects of humanity, but also, at times, its most heartwarming. The best reality TV invites us to embrace the chaos and see a little of ourselves in it.
One thing is for sure: we can’t stop watching. Luckily, streamers like Netflix, Max, and Apple TV+ have a ton of unscripted shows and documentaries to keep you entertained for hours. There’s something for everyone, from die-hard romantics to food porn addicts to fashion obsessives. Not all of it is good. In fact, most of it isn’t. But that’s not the point.
