(Stacker) – When Netflix launched its streaming service in 2007, it changed the way we watch TV, but it wasn’t until 2013 that the platform transformed itself into its own film and TV studio, completely revolutionizing the industry.
That same year, Netflix released its first original series, House of Cards. The political drama became the first original streaming series to win an Emmy Award, setting the stage for an entertainment revolution.
Today, there are so many streaming services out there, and the amount of content options can be downright overwhelming.
Gone are the days of live-tweeting season finales or throwing premiere watch parties; we’ve become accustomed to binge-watching shows from the comfort of our own couches, on our own time.
This access has transformed the TV industry: 99% of U.S. households subscribe to at least one streaming service and pay an average of $46 per month for streaming services, according to a 2024 Forbes Home survey. But as streaming has gained dominance, it has begun to take on characteristics of cable TV.
The same survey reported that 45% of users had canceled at least one subscription in the past year due to high fees, and platforms are responding by partnering on cable-style bundled plans.
Companies like Disney are experimenting with continuous TV-style channels on the platform to drive awareness and revenue through advertising.
As the streaming giant continues to expand, there are bound to be growing pains. Changes will happen. Some good, some annoying, but one thing is for sure: streaming is here to stay, and there’s plenty of programming to choose from. So how do you choose?
Blockbuster shows like “The Squid Game,” “Stranger Things” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” will return for new seasons in 2024 and 2025, while new series will premiere every week and older favorites will also be available on the platform.
