(Stacker) When Netflix launched its streaming service in 2007, it changed the way we watch TV, but it wasn’t until 2013 that the platform transformed itself into its own film and TV studio, completely revolutionizing the industry.
That same year, Netflix released its first original series, House of Cards. The political drama became the first original streaming series to win an Emmy Award, setting the stage for an entertainment revolution.
Today, the number of streaming services is expansive, and the amount of content options can be overwhelming. Gone are the days of live-tweeting during season finales or hosting premiere watch parties. We’ve become accustomed to binge-watching shows from the comfort of our own couches, at our own convenience.
This access has transformed the television industry: According to a 2024 Forbes Home poll, 99% of American households subscribe to at least one streaming service and pay an average of $46 per month for streaming services.
But as streaming takes over, it’s beginning to take on characteristics of cable TV: The same survey reported that 45% of users canceled at least one subscription in the past year due to high prices, and platforms are responding by partnering on cable-era bundle deals. Companies like Disney are experimenting with serialized TV-style channels on their platforms to drive awareness and revenue through advertising.
As the streaming giant continues to expand, there are bound to be growing pains. Changes will happen. Some good, some annoying, but one thing is for sure: streaming is here to stay, and there’s plenty of programming to choose from. So how do you choose?
Smash hits like “The Squid Game,” “Stranger Things” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” are returning for new seasons in 2024 and 2025, but new series premiere and old favorites are available on the platform every week.
