dune 2
Dune Part 2 is not only one of the best movies of the year, but depending on who you ask, one of the best science fiction movies ever made. And yet it’s about to become the latest victim of Warner Bros.’ policy of putting most movies on Max Streaming 45 days after their theatrical release.
That means Dune: Part 2’s streaming release date will be April 16th, a month and a half after its original March 1st release. It’s scheduled to be released in about 48 hours, but as I’ve said before, I argue that it was a poor decision on Warner Bros.’ part to cancel the theatrical release.
why? There are several reasons.Firstly, this is definitely one of the best movies to watch in the theater I have Until now Witness stunning visuals, incredible scores, and flawless sound design. The message should be that the experience simply doesn’t translate to home viewing, and that you really, really need to see it in a theater if possible.
Second, it is still performing well despite a significant reduction in screen time. The film still grossed $7.4 million domestically this weekend, two days before its streaming release, for a worldwide total of $669,384,065. Thankfully, that decision was made correctly, as Dune 3, Dune: Messiah, was already decided based on how wildly this movie surpassed the tone of the first. But of all the movies, releasing this one just a month and a half after its release was a mistake.

I’ve seen other studios recognize this as well. Part of the reason for Barbie’s huge success is that it wasn’t available for streaming for five full months after its release last year. “Oppenheimer” was released on July 21, 2023, and on streaming he was not released until February 2024. This idea that Dune Part 2 should be released for streaming just 45 days after its release proves how much this desire drives people to streaming services. It can actively harm the media being sold. They’re still treating this like a pandemic movie even though we’re already way beyond that.
WB has been pulled in various directions to pay off its debts, at times removing shows from Max and even canceling completed films altogether. The 45-day period is intended to encourage more Max subscribers, but the argument is that it costs more than it helps. That’s definitely true of Dune 2.
Of course, I absolutely recommend Dune 2 in any format. But considering it’s still in theaters and showing at least a few times a day at your local theater, I’d probably 300% recommend seeing it there.
