On April 10, 2024, PlaySide Studios, the developer of the award-winning real-time strategy Age of Darkness: The Final Stand, announced its next project called Kill Knight at the Triple I Initiative event. The game is an isometric action shooter that takes inspiration from gritty arcade shooters like DOOM and fast-paced top-down action games like Hades.
Kill Knight will be released later this year for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
The premise of Kill Knight is the dark story of a knight who is betrayed and banished forever to a hellish realm known as the Abyss. The knight is then brought back to life as an immortal corpse trapped in demonic armor, unable to go to the afterlife.
Reincarnated as the titular Kill Knight, the protagonist is forced by a mysterious call to fight his way through the five demon-infested layers of the Abyss and defeat the Last Angel.
Kill Knight is advertised as a difficult title that requires skill and aggression to beat, so achieving your goals won’t be easy. Players must collect heavy weapons and armor and learn unique abilities to counter the enemies in front of them.
Additionally, if the player manages to survive as long as possible, the game rewards the player with kill power. This is a passive his buff that increases speed and damage output to help overcome the more difficult arenas of the Abyss.
Once players complete the main story, Kill Knight offers players new ways to replay the game. Adjust the difficulty level to make the game harder, take on the master mode that combines all five tiers of the Abyss into one giant gauntlet arena, or post your scores on the global leaderboard to compete with other players. The gritty, violent aesthetic of 1990s boomer shooters is strongly reflected in Kill Knight
Aside from the extremely violent and fast-paced arcade gameplay, what personally impresses me about Kill Knight is its visual presentation. The game features low-poly, retro graphics reminiscent of early 3D games like DOOM and Quake, but with a dark, minimalist, and nightmarish feel that matches the game’s terrifying setting and violent gameplay. Refined to modern standards to create an ambiance.
