Today marks three years since Apple introduced the 24-inch iMac, a revolutionary redesign that first integrated Apple Silicon into its product line.
Apple announced the new 24-inch iMac on April 20, 2021, nearly nine years after the previous iMac redesign was announced. It replaces both the 21.5-inch and 27-inch Intel iMacs and represents a recommitment to the long-standing desktop product line.
The long-awaited redesign offers a much thinner and more compact body than its predecessor, and comes in a range of vibrant colors reminiscent of the original iMac from the late 1990s. The 24-inch 4.5K Retina display boasts 11.3 million pixels and support for 1 billion colors.
The new model is notable not only for its modern design, but also as the first “iMac” to incorporate Apple silicon, and one of the last Macs to migrate away from Intel. Apple claimed that the M1 chip delivered up to 85% faster CPU performance and up to 2x faster GPU performance compared to his previous 21.5-inch iMac model. The new iMac included a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, studio-quality microphones, a six-speaker sound system, and a color-matched Magic Keyboard with Touch ID.
In November 2023, Apple refreshed its 24-inch iMac with an M3 chip, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3. Rumor has it that an iMac with a larger screen, positioned as the iMac Pro, will be released in 2025. In June 2023, bloombergMark Garman said the high-end iMac is still in its infancy and could take another year or two to be released.
