Spring is here and Hulu has a ton of new movies. The streaming service is better known for its TV shows than its movies, but that doesn’t mean you should sleep on its top-notch movie library.
This month, Hulu’s best movies are joined by several award-winning titles that have been praised by critics and viewers alike. Leading the way are blockbusters such as Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and her DCEU hit Wonder Woman. But you’ll also find some offbeat thrillers, like the thought-provoking “Take Shelter” and the monster movie “The Host,” from “Parasite” director Bong Joon-ho.
We’ve taken a cue from review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes to separate the chaff by listing only the most positively reviewed new Hulu movies. So you know most critics give them the thumbs up. Turn on the TV, grab some popcorn, and get ready to start watching. Here are the best new movies added to Hulu this month.
Little Women (2019)
Following the success of “Lady Bird,” “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig is giving us the poignant version of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 classic novel “Little Women” that we didn’t know we needed. We have achieved a complete adaptation. Gerwig’s version takes a non-linear approach to Alcott’s story of four sisters growing up in Civil War-era Massachusetts.
Gerwig does a masterful job of maintaining this endearing coming-of-age story while injecting it with her own style of humor, heart, and sadness. And given her actor-focused directorial style, Little Women features an all-star cast that includes Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Meryl Streep, Timothée Chalamet, and Emma Watson. No wonder.

Wonder Woman (2017)
Countless actresses have donned the Wonder Woman leotard, but this was the first movie in which the famous superheroine hogged the spotlight. Gal Gadot was perfect for the character, who leaves the protection of the only home she’s ever known, the women-only paradise of Themyscira, to join the battles of World War I. She believes that World War I was started by the god Ares. destroy humanity.
Patty Jenkins is best known for writing and directing the breakthrough film Monster, which would become one of the most acclaimed films in the DC Extended Universe series. “Wonder Woman” is packed with stunning visual effects to complement it, and the film’s romance feels real without being over-the-top, and pairs well with the humor sprinkled throughout.

“Take Shelter” (2011)
“Take Shelter” follows the journey of a seemingly ordinary family man (Michael Shannon) who is haunted by apocalyptic dreams and visions of an impending storm. Fearing for the safety of his loved ones, he begins building an elaborate shelter in his backyard.
Although his wife (Jessica Chastain) is concerned about his mental health and insists on counseling, he refuses to build the bunker, despite the risk of sacrificing the family he is trying to protect. I don’t try to stop. Featuring nuanced performances from Shannon and Chastain, “Take Shelter” is a thoughtful thriller full of twists and turns that tackles serious subject matter and raises interesting questions about how far we’ll go for the people we love. .

“The Host” (2006)
Oscar-winner director Bong Joon-ho directed a number of great films, including the seminal monster movie “The Host,” before receiving international acclaim with “Parasite.”
The legendary director weaves a chilling story inspired by true reporting, starting with American soldiers dumping toxic chemicals into South Korea’s Han River. Years later, a terrifying giant creature emerges from the water, attacks people, and kidnaps a young woman (Go Ah-sung). Her father Gang-du (Song Kang-ho) leads a rescue mission to get her back, but she must overcome obstacles and officials in her path.

“Captain Phillips” (2013)
Part of “Captain Phillips” was filmed near my hometown (the cafe there was named after the food, because Tom Hanks stopped by for a snack during filming). Therefore, I have a legal obligation to include it on this list. In the film, which is inspired by a true story, Hanks plays the titular captain of a container ship taken hostage by Somali pirates in 2009.
Hanks plays Captain Phillips, a down-to-earth and seemingly unfazed character who risks his life to protect his crew from the dangerous men who board the ship. As the situation looks increasingly dire, he puts on a brave face and stands up to the pirate leader (Barhad Abdi), maintaining his resolve despite the increasing danger. Director Paul Greengrass continues to ratchet up the tension, delivering a suspenseful and engaging film that puts the audience in Phillips’ shoes.
