The 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, the first streaming television broadcast on Netflix, is a fun, compact, 133-minute ceremony that features 2023 hit film Oppenheimer and TV favorite Succession. The cast of “The Bear” was honored.
The telecast began with the SAG Awards’ traditional “I’m an Actor” moment, and the performers were thrown into disarray after Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”) found a dead mouse in the host’s costume. explained aspects of his experience as a working actor in detail with humor. Idris Elba said he was kicked out of Robert De Niro’s office before Elba became a successful actor.
“After going through some very difficult times during the strike, it is especially meaningful for us all to be here together on this occasion,” Elba said, referring to last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike. AFTRA President Fran Drescher took to the stage like Evita with her arms raised and gave a victory lap speech.
Drescher’s speech lambasted artificial intelligence, and understandably went viral given its potential impact on actors. But then she burst into her lecture about her content and she said: “Dystopian stories can also become self-fulfilling prophecies. Before we move on to a commentary on women’s leadership, we hope they inspire the human spirit, connect us to the natural world, and love us unconditionally.” We should tell stories that awaken the powers that be.” The camera cut to John Lithgow, who looked just as confused as I felt.
Elba proved to be an engaging host who cracked a few jokes (which mostly worked) before the awards presentation began.
If there was a disappointment, it was a repeat of the recent Emmy and Golden Globe winners. There were few surprise winners, but Elizabeth Debicki’s lead actress drama win for “The Crown” and Pedro Pascal’s lead actor drama win for “The Last of Us” were It was unexpected for both the participants and the recipients.
“I’m a little drunk,” Pascal said. “I thought you’d get drunk. …Oh, Louise, you’re making fun of me.”
The SAG Awards celebrates Barbra Streisand’s Lifetime Achievement Award and reunites the cast of The Devil Wears Prada, Modern Family, Breaking Bad, and The Fly. It took over last month’s Emmy Awards for Outstanding Television Broadcast. ”, which stars Geena Davis and Pittsburgh native Jeff Goldblum, who remained in the spotlight until 1986, the year “The Fly” was released, when Davis reminded Goldblum that the SAG Awards didn’t exist. He lamented that his film was not nominated for a SAG Award.
So how is Netflix’s “SAG Awards” different from broadcast network award shows?
Winners who did not participate in the playoffs: The music didn’t rise up in the middle of the speech to crown the winner. Jeremy Allen White, who won Best Actor on TV for his role in The Bear, even said, “Wow, they spent a lot of time on this, but that’s all I can do!” Said.
Profanity is allowed (in some cases): Host Idris Elba brought up the possibility of profanity, referring to Netflix, which doesn’t have FCC rules to follow like broadcast networks, saying, “I don’t think it’s going to go to the full ‘Succession’ level, but I think it’s true that ‘Ted’ How about ‘Lasso’?” he suggested. ‘Level? ” Oddly, shortly after the profanity in the “Ted Lasso” clip was beeped, Ali Wong, who won Best Actress in a Limited Series for Netflix’s “Beef,” was 83 years old. The presenter and the award recipient were not beeped because he said his mother had passed away. She attended wearing her pearls and Tevas because she “doesn’t say (expletive)!”
There are no commercials, but there are breaks: Even on Netflix’s ad-supported tier, the livestream was ad-free. However, as the awards were temporarily suspended, the show took a break, allowing Tan France to interview the winners backstage. Occasionally we got some insight into the winners’ personalities, but most of them seemed filler-filled, especially when we went to these segments right when the show was supposed to be ending.
I still managed to run for a long time: The “SAG Awards,” which was scheduled to last two hours, lasted about 13 minutes longer this time around, as do award shows on broadcast networks.
Buffering issues: I don’t think this is a widespread issue as this is “my own problem”, but it’s something to keep in mind when streaming live shows. Please make sure your internet connection is stable.
Although not the first entertainment awards show to be streamed, the Daytime Emmy Awards are being streamed live on Amazon’s Prime Video, and the Academy of Country Music Awards in May will also be streaming. It will continue to be distributed. The “SAG Awards” represent the world’s first major entertainment awards show. Stream on Netflix, the largest global streaming platform.
“The SAG Awards” will be available on Netflix for the next 28 days, but on-demand viewing will be interrupted by commercials.
“SAG Awards” aired on Turner Networks (TNT, TBS) for 25 years until 2022. Last year, his contract with Netflix ended too late for him to stream, so his TV broadcasts were streamed on YouTube.
The “SAG Awards” will be held in March 2023 with “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” and in April 2023 with the technically difficult live “Love Is Blind” reunion. It marks Netflix’s latest attempt to expand into the events field. Netflix’s next live event is the tennis event “The Netflix Slam” (Rafael Nadal vs. Carlos Alcaraz) on March 3rd.
