UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. (AP) – A tour tram crashed into a railing at Universal Studios Hollywood near Los Angeles, leaving more than a dozen people with minor injuries, authorities and the company said.
Los Angeles County Fire Department units responded to the Universal City theme park, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday, the agency said in a social media post.
A Universal Studios Hollywood spokesperson confirmed in an email to The Associated Press that there were “multiple minor injuries,” but did not provide further details about the accident.
According to the fire department, 15 people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Sheriff’s Lt. Maria Abal said there may have been a problem with the brakes on the four-car streetcar used for tours of the movie studio’s backlot.
The California Highway Patrol will lead the investigation, the fire department said.
Dubbed the World Famous Studio Tour, this tram circuit offers a behind-the-scenes look at Universal films such as “Jaws” and Jordan Peele’s “Nope.” The theme park will celebrate 60 years of touring starting Friday.
