ST. George — Utah Tech continues its exploration of generative artificial intelligence by offering a free community AI class for the spring 2024 semester.
“As the pace of evolution and development of AI increases, we see a growing gap between traditional education and the latest developments,” course instructor Conor Young told St. George News stated in an email sent to. “We wanted to create a class where people could come together to discuss advances in AI and how they can leverage it in their fields.”
The use of AI is wide-ranging, from education and business to learning and development.
The course will be held in the Science, Engineering, and Technology Building following the success of the AI Pop-Up Community Class held last fall. Seats are limited for free classes, but the pop-up format gives participants the flexibility to choose the classes they want to attend.
Young said he and his colleagues decided there was a need to discuss AI and were inspired to create the program.
“There is so much evolving and coming out when it comes to AI that we wanted to keep ourselves (and others) as up-to-date as possible,” says Young. .
Young emphasized that AI is becoming more pervasive and emphasized the importance of understanding how it works.
“AI is pervasive and will be everywhere sooner or later,” he says. “These classes provide a great opportunity for those already interested in AI to delve into its capabilities and explore its potential applications.”
The course will primarily feature discussion-based sessions and focus on topics such as prompt engineering, app building, and coding with AI, according to a press release issued by the university. It also aligns with Utah Tech’s polytechnic mission, which emphasizes hands-on learning and prepares students for their careers.
“We encourage anyone who is interested in how AI can be effectively used in our lives to join us,” Young added. “Many of the classes will be code-focused and a little less ‘beginner’, but the first few weeks on custom GPT will be a good place for people to start.”
This class is held every Wednesday at noon in Room 106 of the Science, Engineering, and Technology Building. The first class he will begin on Wednesday, January 24th.
