One reader claims that video games are targeted at the wrong people, that adult gamers need shorter games and vice versa for younger players.
I don’t consider myself that old. I’m not interested in TikTok or eSports since she’s 42 years old, but I can’t say I was a fossil otherwise and I’m totally embarrassed for my kids to join my games. There were at least a few times that it wasn’t. In front of you. But according to a recent Reader’s Feature, traditional video games are only for older adults. But if that’s true, I don’t know how they find the time.
Last week’s Reader’s feature was really good, with publishers now into live service games and thinking that kids aren’t interested in consoles, so traditional titles, if not really aimed at adults, It claimed it was now intended for adults only. Target audience.
It was all very reasonable, but I’m sure I wasn’t the only one with lots of evidence that kids are totally interested in gaming consoles. Especially when you’re trying to get back to using your TV. But my main point, and this is due to the logic of the publishers and not the full-length authors, is that modern games are too long and adults don’t have the time and energy for that.
I envisioned a halcyon era in which some games were for children, while others (what we would consider traditional single-player games) were for adults. There are many possible reasons why this will never happen, but the number one reason is that he simply doesn’t have the time to play endless 60+ hour epics.
Perhaps this is just me, but I highly doubt it. I love video games, so I’m sad that I can’t play them as much as I used to when I was younger, but due to work and family commitments, I don’t have the opportunity to do so. And when you do sit down and do something, some games can be so overwhelming and intimidating that you don’t even know where to start.
I sat down to play Baldur’s Gate 3 the other day, and it took me so long to figure out how to control anything that the thought of playing another 100 hours quickly turned me off and I had to play it again. I never got to play. I can’t say I play video games to relax exactly, but I also don’t play video games to feel like I’m taking an exam.
Ironically, many older players find themselves much happier playing games with short attention spans that children seem to enjoy. Fortnite, mobile games, etc. The problem is, it’s not aimed at adults, so there really isn’t much play worth the time we have available.
Similarly, children have a lot of time on their hands, but all the games aimed at them are very superficial and simplistic. So the only way to make kids live longer is to keep playing them repeatedly and make it social. The gameplay and story aren’t the selling point at all.
Basically, the video game industry is backward. Games for children should be longer and more complex. Because children are the only ones given time. And games for adults should be shorter and simpler. Well, maybe not as simple, but at least more intensive.
One thing we’ve learned over the last few months is that none of the gamers seem to have much of an understanding of what’s going on, but they’re probably more wrong than they think. Probably.
