An email message from Google has gone viral stating that Gmail service will be shutting down on August 1st.
Updated below on 02/25. This article was originally published on February 23rd.
This realistic-looking email message was posted on X (formerly Twitter) with the headline, “Google is killing Gmail.” This apparently genuine statement to Gmail users tells all 2 billion account holders that as of August 1st, “Gmail is coming to an end” and that starting from that date, “you will no longer be able to send, receive, or send email. This served as a reminder that “Save” will no longer be supported.
“You can access and download all emails until August 1, 2024,” the email said.
Perhaps it’s no surprise that many took this very seriously. Especially since in recent months there has been real talk about Google deleting old Gmail accounts and new rules that will reject certain messages sent to her Gmail account by bulk senders.
Add to this the fact that Google has a history of shutting down services that many people find useful. Think of Google Stadia, for example. This email shocked the entire X.
However, astute readers will quickly notice that posts on X are marked as manipulated media.of Manipulated media policy It says posts containing media that is “substantially and deceptively altered, manipulated, or fabricated” are prohibited. It appears that the statement that was being circulated did indeed have such changes. This was actually a modified copy of Google’s statement about removing the basic HTML view of Gmail messages.
While some may consider such posts to be just for fun, such misinformation can cause unnecessary anxiety among service users. It may also lead to phishing emails. Google itself responded by posting a message to X saying, “Gmail is here to stay.”
I have asked Google for a statement and will update this article if it is released.
Updated February 25th: The news that Gmail was being shut down turned out to be a hoax, but Google has announced that it will be shutting down another popular service, at least to some users.
Joris van Mens, Product Manager, Google Pay Group: announced This service is scheduled to shut down for some users on June 4, 2024. This closure affects users based in the US who use the Google Pay app.
The Google Pay app has users in 180 countries and more than 1 total download. The exact number of users this affects is unknown. However, the announcement confirms that the “millions of people who use the Google Pay app in India and Singapore” will still be able to use it.
For U.S. users, to “simplify the app experience,” Bunmen said, “the most popular features (tap-to-pay in-store and managing payment methods) continue to be used in five locations.” You can access it directly from your Google Wallet.” It’s twice as big as the Google Pay app in the US. ”
Users affected by this end of service will still be able to check their Google Pay account balances and send money to their bank accounts after June 4, but they will still be able to check their Google Pay account balances and send money to their bank accounts, but they will still be able to do so using the “US version of the Google Pay app.”
