This week we’re featuring award-winning films making their streaming debut, new Netflix Originals, fun TV shows, great theatrical releases, and more. Check out our complete streaming guide from the past weekend below.

So let’s get started!
What’s new in streaming this weekend
Trigger Warning (Netflix)
A Netflix original action thriller starring Jessica Alba. It tells the story of a special forces operative who returns from a mission in the Middle East after the death of his father. After taking over the management of his family’s bar, he gets caught up in a violent gang and fights back with his special forces training. Audiences and critics have panned it, but the verdict seems to be “slick and formulaic.” Fans of Alba, especially, may enjoy it as a fun, violent escape from reality. The trailer has some cool fight scenes, which may be enough for a movie like this. Still, the reviews are worse than the first film. Atlas or Rebel Moon Part 2. Wow.
Kung Fu Panda 4 (The Peacock)
I loved the original Kung Fu Panda It stars Jack Black as Po, a martial arts and noodle master (though he was far from a master at the time). I haven’t watched much of the series, but the fourth movie was pretty well received by critics, audiences loved it, and it’s now streaming on Peacock, which is less than ideal. Peacock is probably my least favorite streaming service, but it does have some great content. Still, if you’re looking for the perfect movie to enjoy with the whole family and don’t want to make a trip to the theater, this is a good option.
Oppenheimer (Amazon Prime Video)
Oppenheimer is a fantastic film from the talented director Christopher Nolan and an extraordinary cast. It’s a moving story of one man’s genius and burden; a morality tale of sorts, and an important part of our shared history. But despite how well made the whole thing was, I left the cinema with very mixed feelings. You can read my review here, and the film, starring Cillian Murphy, is available to stream on Prime Video.
Aftersun (Netflix)
Aftersun (sounds like a sci-fi video game) has been on my radar for a long time thanks to rave reviews and great trailers, and now I’m watching the A24 drama on Netflix and feeling like Inside Out 2 There will be no more tears this week. The director’s film follows Callum (Paul Mescal) and his 11-year-old daughter Sophie (Fracky Corio) on holiday in Turkey. Don’t forget the tissues.
Dexter (Netflix)
I wrote: Dexter It was released on Netflix earlier this week. Showtime’s serial killer drama has a bad ending, but it has some great seasons and is worth watching. Michael C. Hall is excellent in the lead role. Breaking Bad This is a very tense anti-hero show where you can’t help but root for someone you know is a very bad guy. While watching this series, I was often on edge, worried that Dexter Morgan would get caught and that he would put other characters I care about in danger. It was good (for about 5 seasons).
Agent Recon (VOD — June 21)
Chuck Norris is 84 years old, he makes a lot of controversial comments, he dyes his hair and beard, but you have to admit he’s still making action movies at over 80 years old. Agent Recon It’s so bad I’m thinking about renting it on video on demand ($6.99 on Amazon) just to write a review. Life is short, and so is this movie, but there are other things to watch. Shadow of the Elder Tree play.
Furiosa: The Mad Max Saga (VOD — June 24th)
I caught this movie in the theater just in time. I went to see it this week with my son, brother and a friend and we all loved it. The trailer made me a little nervous but we all left the theater with smiles on our faces. Fury Road, But it adds a lot of lore and richness. Mad Max It’s a Universe masterpiece and has some of the best action scenes in the series – read my review here.
New Documentary
This list would be too long to include trailers for each one, but all three are pretty damn fascinating.
Bread and roses The series, which will be available on Apple TV+, follows three women after the Taliban take control of Kabul, Afghanistan in 2021.
Federer: The last 12 days The video, available on Prime Video, is a home-filmed clip of Swiss tennis champion Roger Federer’s final two weeks in 2022 as he competed in the Laver Cup, his final tournament as a professional player.
The Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Shelley Papini Hulu is currently streaming a three-part documentary series on the infamous Papini kidnapping case, so infamous that Eminem even referenced him in a new song. Houdini. I won’t spoil the ending.
New theatrical release
Bike Riders (Now in theaters)
Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy (and The Walking Dead I was really looking forward to this period drama about early biker gangs, starring actors like Norman Reedus, I thought it was really funny and I loved how it had a 1960s American feel.
Bad Boys Ride or Die (Now in theaters)
I’ve been to the cinema a few times already this week, but I’m feeling the urge to just sit back and enjoy myself. Bad Boys: Ride or Die, it is Bad Boys 4 Lives But the third movie flopped, which is how a summer blockbuster should be.
Inside Out 2 (now in theaters)
I actually went to see this movie twice last week. The first time, my teenage daughter didn’t want to go, so I went with my son. It was amazing. I convinced my daughter and her boyfriend to go with me, and she loved it as much as I did, even though they both cried like babies. Pixar is back! (Here’s my review).
Thelma (Now in theaters)
This action comedy starring June Squibb tells the story of a “spirited 93-year-old grandma who is duped by a phone con man (White Lotus’ Fred Hechinger) posing as her grandson and embarks on a dangerous journey through Los Angeles accompanied by an elderly friend (Richard Roundtree) and his electric scooter to reclaim what was stolen from her.” It’s a great movie. It’s rare to see movies like this starring older people, but I think it’s great. (Um, well, Agent Recon… ). This is what I would do if my 91 year old grandmother was scammed.
Streaming TV shows
House of the Dragon Season 2 (Sundays on HBO/Max)
Under review House of the Dragon I’ll be reporting on it every week on this blog. Episode 2 will be released this Sunday. I finally got a hold of a screener, so I’ll post my review as soon as it airs. So far, game of thrones The spinoff does not disappoint with its second season. Throne, With a ton of characters to care about, as well as a dark look at the Targaryen civil war, it remains incredibly compelling TV — read my review of the season premiere here.
The Boys Season 4 (Thursdays on Prime Video)
I’ve only seen two episodes so far the boys I’m currently enjoying Season 4 for the most part, although it does feel like it’s in a spinning phase where the story itself isn’t progressing very much (especially compared to the truly fascinating mystery of Season 1). 5th Generation) and I enjoy it mostly for the funny, gory, lewd, gross and shock and awe moments. Still, it’s entertaining and I’m hoping the next episode will move the story forward more. This series needs momentum more than anything.
Presumed Innocent (Fridays on Apple TV)
I enjoyed the first two episodes Presumed innocent (Oh, I need to write a review.) The third movie is out today (Friday) on Apple TV+, so I’ll have to watch it to find out. But if you like tense mysteries where you never know if the main character is guilty or innocent, this one’s pretty good. Jake Gyllenhaal is great. Prosecutor Rusty Sabich is accused of (spoiler alert) murdering his colleague and lover, Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsweg).
Blue Light Season 2 (Thursdays on BritBox)
Blue Light is one of my favorite relatively new British police dramas. I’ve watched the entire second season, with episodes currently streaming weekly on BritBox, and this Northern Irish crime drama is still pretty good, although not as good as season one. Some of the storylines feel too rushed and a bit contrived, and it’s not as shocking as season one. Still, I highly recommend the series, mainly because I liked the characters and it offers a great glimpse into policing in a very culturally divided city with a history of paramilitary violence.
Acolyte (Tuesdays on Disney+)
Acolyte Another lackluster Disney release, at least for now Star Wars The show has four more episodes left to change my mind, but at least so far, the show has ranged from mediocre to downright awful (The power of one! The power of two! The power of many! The end of last week’s episode left me super excited but ended on a very frustrating cliffhanger, I’m praying but not expecting much.
Final episode of Doctor Who (Saturday on Disney+)
Haven’t seen it yet Doctor Who But we know the show is incredibly popular and this new version of the time-travelling Doctor will come to an end with this Saturday’s season finale. Have you enjoyed this season?
Ok, this guide is already long enough. I started writing it thinking that there wouldn’t be much information coming out this weekend, but I was so wrong.
