Every week, I comb through all the best (and sometimes the worst) new streaming content, new theatrical releases, and basically any movies, TV shows, documentaries, etc. that I think might interest my readers, and compile them into this friendly neighborhood streaming guide.
This week has been a little lighter on content than the past two weeks, but there are still some new shows and movies worth checking out, as well as a bunch of ongoing shows that I have my eye on, so be sure to tune in too! Check out my streaming guide from the past weekend below:
I’m always looking for recommendations twitter If you have Facebook, please share it too.
So let’s get started!
What’s new in streaming this weekend
The Bear Season 3 (Hulu)
Season 1 bear It was stressful, but awesome. But for some reason I never got around to watching season 2. Now, season 3 is available in its entirety on Hulu, and I have yet another unsettling service industry drama to binge. Last Wednesday, the ongoing misadventures of Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and his restaurant crew were available in full on Hulu.
That 90s Show Season 2 (Netflix)
I was a big fan That 70s Show I used to be a bit worried all the time. That 90s Show Despite (or maybe because) I grew up in the ’90s, I’m sure it’ll just disappoint the guy. If any of you readers have seen the first season, I’m curious what you thought of it. Either way, the second season is now on Netflix, and it takes us back to Kitty and Red’s basement for more mayhem.
Fancy Dance (Apple TV+)
The film hits theaters and Apple TV+ this weekend. Fancy Dance It follows Jax (Lily Gladstone) on a road trip with her niece Loki (Isabelle DeRoy-Olson) searching for Loki’s mother. I always love watching new Indigenous films, and this one has a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (81% with audiences).
New theatrical release
Horizon: An American Saga Part 1
Kevin Costner’s epic western is the first of four planned films, two of which will hit theaters this summer. Critics have only given the film a 40% on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences have been much more favorable (71%). I think the film looks great, like a classic old-fashioned western with all the benefits of modern film technology. But wow, it’s three hours long! The main complaints seem to be that it’s too long, too slow, disjointed, the story is hard to follow, there’s too many cast members and no one to bring it together. Hopefully part two will improve things…
Streaming TV shows
House of the Dragon Season 2 (Sundays on HBO/Max)
Under review House of the Dragon I’ll be reporting on it every week on this blog. Episode 2 will be released this Sunday. I finally got a hold of a screener, so I’ll post my review as soon as it airs. So far, game of thrones The spinoff does not disappoint with its second season. Throne, With a ton of characters to care about, as well as a dark look at the Targaryen civil war, it remains incredibly compelling TV — read my review of the season premiere here.
The Boys Season 4 (Thursdays on Prime Video)
I watched up to episode 4 the boys Season 4 is not my favorite season of the show, but I think it’s pretty good. At times it’s a little forced when it could have been more subtle, and at times it feels like it’s just going in circles rather than moving the story forward, but it’s still fun, gory, and entertaining.
Presumed Innocent (Fridays on Apple TV)
I’ve caught up on everything Presumed innocent So far, it’s really interesting. I’m really liking it, so I need to post a review soon. If you like tense mysteries where you never know if the main character is guilty or innocent, this is pretty good. Jake Gyllenhaal is great. Prosecutor Rusty Sabich is accused of (spoiler alert) murdering his colleague and lover, Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsweg).
Blue Light Season 2 (Thursdays on BritBox)
Blue Light is one of my favorite relatively new British police dramas. I’ve watched the entire second season, with episodes currently streaming weekly on BritBox, and this Northern Irish crime drama is still pretty good, although not as good as season one. Some of the storylines feel too rushed and a bit contrived, and it’s not as shocking as season one. Still, I highly recommend the series, mainly because I like the characters and it offers a great glimpse into policing in a very culturally divided city with a history of paramilitary violence.
Acolyte (Tuesdays on Disney+)
Acolyte So far, the fifth episode is a big disappointment, even though it’s been a lot better than the first four. I like some of the ideas they’re working with, but… Star Wars This show is so poorly written that it fails to impress me, 3 episodes left.
