Indian Railways has come under fire on social media after a photo on the bulletin board of the Hatiya-Ernakulam express train, in which the name ‘Hatiya’ is translated as ‘Kolapatakam’ (murderer) in Malayalam, has surfaced. A photo of the board went viral on the internet, sparking widespread criticism.
A senior divisional commercial manager (Sr DCM) of the Ranchi division told Business Today that the mistake was caused by confusion with the Hindi word ‘hatia’, which means ‘murder’. He confirmed that the erroneous nameplate was immediately corrected after the mistake was brought to our attention.
Passengers were understandably alarmed when they saw the new name displayed on station signs and tickets. In the face of online ridicule, railway authorities quickly covered up the incorrect Malayalam translation with yellow paint.
User X posted a photo of the board with the caption, “Shhh, no one told me.”
