At WWDC 2020, Apple announced a new Car Key feature that lets you control your car using the Wallet app on your iPhone or Apple Watch. Although this feature has been delayed, find the complete list of cars that support Apple Car Key integration below.
What is an Apple car key?
This feature allows users to add their car keys to the Wallet app and use the Wallet app to lock, unlock, and start their car. Although the specific implementation varies by car manufacturer, there are several ways to use Apple’s Car Key functionality.
- passive entry: It unlocks when you approach your car with the device, starts the car when you get inside, and locks when you walk away with the device.
- Proximity: Lock, unlock, and start your car by holding your device close to the door handle or key reader.
- remote: You can use your device to remotely lock and unlock your car and use other features.
Car key functionality also includes support for express mode. This feature allows you to use your car key without unlocking your device or authenticating with Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. The Wallet app also supports sharing your car keys using Messages, Email, AirDrop, and more.
