The price of a simple apple has sparked a heated debate on social media after young shoppers passionately protested paying $7 for a grocery staple.
More than 1 million people saw this accusation by TikTok user @via..li, who just came out of an unnamed branch of Whole Foods.
The Boston-based influencer reached into her bag and grabbed an apple and her phone, leaving her followers in no doubt about her anger.
“I literally went grocery shopping at Whole Foods and saw this,” she said, holding the fruit in question.
“Think about how much this costs. This is an apple. I think it’s called SugarBee’s fucking apple. Look.

“Palm-sized. I think it was about two or three dollars. I scanned this bastard, I scanned him, seven dollars, seven dollars!”
She said she checked with store staff to make sure there were no mistakes and was confident she paid the correct price.
“What kind of economy do we live in when it costs $7 to buy an apple?” she demanded.
“I could have sworn the other apples I bought weren’t $7. Isn’t $7 for a latte crazy? Okay.
“This apple should be very tasty.”
The video, which has since been taken down, sparked skepticism in some quarters after Whole Foods’ website suggested that the apples in question were sold for $3.99 per pound.
The one this blogger purchased costs $7 and weighs 28 ounces, but it seems to fit comfortably in the influencer’s hand.
After two years of rampant inflation hit household budgets hard, the average American household now spends $1,080 a month at the grocery store.
However, some criticized her for shopping at an upscale grocery store in the first place.
“Probably at some Whole Foods store buying an apple that was harvested by a vegan, washed in ice cold water from a glacier, and blessed with hippie crystals while the planet was in retrograde motion,” VidgyaG tweeted. did.
“Go to Wally World and buy a bag of apples with pesticides for $3,” JC_Midwest suggested.
sashakaka445 added: “Just kidding, she checked the price and still bought it.”
“It’s Whole Foods!” @KeyserSmoze added, “Look at the parking lot!” See the Maserati, Lamborghini, Bentley and Rolls Royce?
“Find a store with a Ford, Chevrolet, and Toyota in the parking lot. Seven dollars will buy you a bag of apples.”
Elle Henderson wrote, “Your first and only mistake was shopping at Whole Foods” and “I don’t understand how people who aren’t wealthy can afford to buy things that don’t prolong their lives.” .
Others were more sympathetic.
“The truth is, this is not a gourmet apple. The food cost is outrageous!” ErinSpksLoudr wrote.
The annual inflation rate has fallen to 3.5% from a high of 9.1% in June 2022, but food prices remain high.
In real terms, prices for hundreds of food items have increased by more than 50% since 2019.
And some people defended the store.
“Why don’t you buy fancy apples at Whole Foods? I just bought 6 pounds of Fuji this week for just over $7,” KellyOwens9997 wrote.
Others noted that “SugarBee” is one of the most expensive apples available anywhere.
Created in Washington in the early 1990s, this flower is the result of accidental cross-pollination between Honeycrisp and another unknown variety.
“She needed a reason to make the abusive video,” Ken W. Kennedy suggested.
“Buy that $7 apple and make a tiktok complaining about that apple and make hundreds to thousands of dollars in return,” another added.
