Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver was released on Netflix this weekend. Good news? Indeed, it topped the list of most-watched movies this week on the service. The bad news? The film has been mercilessly panned and derided by critics and fans alike, and it’s hard to imagine how much more will be needed to justify further investment in a universe that Zack Snyder has stated he wants to span a total of four to six films. You’ll need to hit some serious numbers. That’s unlikely.
Netflix can If something is popular enough, forgive bad reviews. After all, they care more about ratings than fame, but there are limits. The combination of the project’s high cost (Rebel Moon Parts 1 and 2 reportedly cost around $166 million), poor reception, and poor viewership couldn’t have been a better recipe for a green light. not. And again, the reception is bad and we can’t see what’s going on with the level moon.
The ratings for the first Rebel Moon didn’t break Netflix’s all-time top 10 list, but the last time I checked, Snyder said it was somewhere between 80 and 90, so if it did make it. I don’t know where he will rank in the top 20. He racked up millions of views (more people have seen Rebel Moon than Barbie, he claimed). It’s a sequel to the poorly received first film, so it’s no surprise that the second film did poorly. And his R-rated cuts of Parts 1 and 2, which will be released this summer, will probably end up doing some of the original, even if it’s the version that should have been released in the first place.
If you look at Netflix’s top 10 list of most-watched original movies of all time, you’ll see that nothing else has scored close to this when combining critics and viewership.
- Red Notice – 37% critics, 92% viewers
- Don’t Look Up – 55% Critics, 78% Audience
- The Adam Project – 68% critics, 73% viewers
- Bird Box – 64% critics, 58% viewers
- Leave the World Behind – 74% Critics, 35% Audiences
- The Gray Man – 45% Critics, 90% Audiences
- We Can Be Heroes – 74% Critics, 41% Viewers
- The Mother – 43% critics, 62% viewers
- Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery – 92% Critics, 92% Audiences
- Extraction – 67% critics, 71% viewers
Compare it with:
- Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire – Critics 21%, Audience 57%
- Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver – 17% critics, 50% viewers
Films like Red Notice and The Gray Man may be panned by critics, but if audiences like them and word of mouth spreads, that’s good enough (both films have sequels in the works). ). In this case, Rebel Moon both have lower critic scores than all the films on this list, and only two have lower audience scores (Leave the World Behind). Anyone who rates it that low is insane, but I digress).
Sometimes we may not agree with the critics, but the consensus score is that Low is a very good indicator of film quality in general. And without higher ratings to drive word-of-mouth, given the low ratings and high cost of sci-fi blockbusters, unless some miracle happens, Rebel Moon will be released after the R-rated cut is released. , you’ll probably end up submerged in water.
