napoleon, director Ridley Scott’s (who else) 157-minute epic about Napoleon Bonaparte is finally available to stream on Apple TV Plus. The two-and-a-half-hour film depicts Joaquin Phoenix, who played Napoleon, and his growth as a great man, a great general, and a great little eccentric. In particular, the film explores how his graceful climbs lead him through France (and beyond), all the while supporting the body of his wife Josephine de Beauharnais (Vanessa Kirby, aka the new Sue Storm). The focus is on how it came to be. He’s never cool, but he’s always been, as Polygon’s Joshua Rivera said in his review, “the most skilled man of all time.”
Even if it’s 2 hours and 38 minutes, napoleon Many parts of Napoleon have to be removed to tell the story. Fortunately, before the release, Scott longer Cut, his preferred director’s vision. So when will it be that Can I view the version on Apple? Hmm, that’s difficult.
Scott first announced the “amazing” four-and-a-half hour cut in September, saying the longer cut would feature more of Josephine. In October, Scott went further, telling Total Film Magazine that a four-and-a-half hour cut was currently in production, saying: There were four [hours] Ten [minutes] this morning,” Scott told the magazine at the time. “So what happens is we screen.” [the theatrical cut] At first we cooperated with Sony, then Sony took off, and then it was perfect. [the director’s cut] If you move on to streaming, you’ll have 4 hours and 10 minutes left. ”
Apple said nothing, and did not respond to Polygon’s request for comment.
By November, Mr Scott had apparently told Sky News there would be no extension cuts at all, citing the “pain in the butt factor” of people sitting in their seats getting tired. “I think that’s the director’s cut, which is two and a half hours long, and that’s the truth,” he said. “I learned early on, basically from every movie I did, but also from my early days as a commercial maker. Am I able to communicate? And how well can I communicate? Can you communicate with them and say everything you want to say?”
In December, co-writer David Scarpa told IndieWire that the theatrical version was “better” and a “fairly concise version” with nothing left on the editing room floor. “We’ve seen the long version of the content, and like most movies, it works better in a tighter format. We got a lot out of it through the editing,” Scarpa said. “Forget about what’s on the cutting room floor. There’s a lot of stuff that wasn’t in the early drafts that never ended up in front of the cameras. There were other good fights as well. [got caught] Because you’ll get stuck. ”
Meanwhile, Apple remains silent on whether the film will ever come to the platform.
If it seems confusing whether a director’s cut exists, is being released, or is being championed by Scott, that’s because it is. But then again, if there’s anyone who can pull worthy directorial work out of thin air, it’s Scott. While there may be more high-profile campaigns for certain director’s cuts, Scott frequently (even quietly) re-releases his own films, including alternate versions of theatrical cuts. heaven, Counselorand of course, blade runner (It actually includes quite a few “final” cuts from Scott). All of this extends the running time and changes the scope of the film. He’s also familiar with “director’s cuts,” which he largely denies. alien or black hawk down.
Despite the long running time, napoleon To me, it felt like it was just part of the story, there was dialogue out of earshot, and entire scenes were cut out to summarize the story. That’s why I’m so interested in this mythical four-hour cut of her, and all the Josephine fun it might hold. Two hours and 38 minutes is a lot of film, but Ridley “Final Cut” Scott knows what to do with an extra hour and a half. Anyway, if you want.
napoleon is now streaming on Apple TV Plus.
