Yahoo News is integrating Artifact AI-powered technology into its app to give viewers a more “personalized experience” in consuming news.
The revamped app, which launches on Thursday, will use AI features to improve news recommendations, cut down on clickbait and save time through takeaways.
“Yahoo News believes in helping people stay informed, understand the world around them by getting more of the news that matters to them, and even make reading news fun again,” said SVP and GM of Yahoo News in a statement. “To that end, we’re committed to delivering a news experience that’s simple, relevant and helpful for each user, and this new app is just the beginning.”
In March, Yahoo acquired Artifact, an AI-driven news aggregation platform founded by Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. The acquisition was aimed at acquiring Artifact’s AI technology, not its talent.
In April, Yahoo said that AI-powered technology would be “integrated across Yahoo, including the Yahoo News app, in the coming months,” hinting at a move toward integrating AI across the company’s products.
The current integration features an AI-powered personalized feed, similar to Artifact as a standalone product, that allows users to choose the topics and publishers they want to monitor and cut out the ones they don’t need.
The new app also includes the ability to block keywords and flag clickbait, giving users better control over what appears in their individual feeds. Users can also seamlessly share content directly through the app.
Yahoo is also rolling out a new homepage experience for users, which will feature a more dynamic layout that allows for personalized recommendations and real-time trending topics.
